Chile - North or South?
I just booked tickets last week to fly into Santiago next week, spend a few days there, then go to Valparaiso to see my daughter who is spending a semester abroad. My wife and I will be together for the first two weeks, then I'll be traveling solo for a week. I would like to travel either north (Atacama?) or south (Patagagonia?) for that week. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Muchas gracias!

wow....Fantastic. I thought you were going to be traveling in the area in January? We stayed at Manoir Atkinson in the suite in Valparaiso. I enjoyed both North and South. Awasi located at the Atacama Desert was a dream come true! Great location, great private trips, great property. I would highly recommend staying at a place like this if you go to the desert. ("The Edge" from U2 was there with his family while we stayed there.) It is a very small property. If you go south, you could go to the Lake District or further south to Patagonia. We stayed in Puerto Varas and then onwards to The Cliffs. (I haven't seen that offered on LL lately.) Another idea is to fly to Mendoza Argentina. In Santiago we enjoyed The Orly hotel.

My plans changed. My daughter informed me that she wasn't too keen on the idea of traveling with me at the end of her four month stay in Chile, so I canceled that flight (had the miles put back into my account) and now my wife and I are going to visit her while she's still in her college program. That's why I changed my trip from December to October. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm probably going to play it by ear and stay somewhere inexpensive during my week traveling alone. I bought a nice REI backpack and it came in the mail yesterday, so I'm going to revert back to my old traveling style for that week.

Oh...good fun!! Enjoy. I was hoping to meet up while we were there!! We have almost finalized our trip plans. Looking forward to visiting again.

My wife and I are flying to Santiago on Tuesday. We'll stay there for three days, then take a bus to Valparaiso to spend some time with our daughter. We plan to take a few side trips (wineries, La Serena, Vina, etc.). I'm spending an extra week in Chile after my wife leaves, so my current plan is to fly down to Punta Arenas, take a bus to Puerto Natales, then a five day ferry through the fjords to Puerto Mountt. From there, I'll head back to Santiago and then home. I haven't finalized the latter part of my trip and hope to do so today.
