Yes, i have been to the North part of Chile San Pedro de la Atacama is beautiful by the way, although a little chilly! You can easily spend 5 or 6 days here doing al types of different tours - my favourite was the astronemy tour - the skies are so clear down there. One big tip would be to take a lot of cash with you to San Pedro, as the cash machines are rarely full to dispense cash (March 2009).
I also did the trip over the border to Bolivia, and onwards to the salar de Uyni - i saw some of the most amazing scenery ever - i would highly recommend it. Wrap up tho as these places are between 4000m and 5000m high..... also take precausions for altitude sickness, you can buy tablets from the local pharmacies in Chile.

Hi J and thanks for the info. Can you recommend a company to use to go into Bolivia? How many nights did you spend there ? (or how many would you recommend.) We were planning to do about two nights.)
Thanks!
I just read something about transiting into Bolivia from Chile or Peru--US citizens required to have yellow fever vaccine and visa. Thought maybe you'd want to investigate the details. I got my YF vac a few yrs back and have never been asked to show the card. However, the piece I read involved getting the BOL visa was contingent on proof of YFV unless you had medical letter stating your allergy to eggs.
Thanks K. I did more research and found the trip to be too expensive. it was going to cost approximately $3200 for four days and three nights. (and this was not a luxury trip!!) Forget it!
