Not much open space left in Cuzco - pretty soon all you will see in the center of the city is hotels. Good business for Peru and Cuzco, I hope the plans have been nixed to start opening more hotels right at Machu Pichu - Sanctuary Lodge is enough

Aren't both of you glad you visited Peru prior to all of the recent hype and were able to enjoy some of what it has to offer without all of the current crowds. I'm sure Cusco will soon be jammed with more people than it can handle. Once I start seeing all of the big name hotels arriving, it is likely time to consider a different adventure destination.

Does anyone know or has anyone heard of Machu Pichu limited access by tourists? We thought we heard this awhile ago but nothing more...thanks!

04-01-2011, 06:31 AMI just read the following item in a travel publication yesterday. Guess you had better book early, if you are considering going to Peru.
"Peru recorded 641,437 foreign tourists that arrived to the country in the first trimester of 2011, a growth of 16 percent compared to the same period in 2010, according to vice minister of tourism Mara Seminario. These visitors generated $715 million worth of income for the country, representing a 15.4 percent increase compared to the first trimester of last year.
These statistics come on the heels of Peru being voted the world's "hottest up and coming tourist destination" by the United States Tour Operators Association, and advancing five spots in the 2011 World Economic Forum’s ranking of competitiveness in the travel and tourism industry."

I think Americans are finally catching on to the fact that Latin America is a a great place to travel to in terms of cost, distance and sights to see. I know that I have been seeing more articles in the travel section of the Philadelphia Inquirer on destinations in Latin America - when we start seeing this, the hubby and I start to think that maybe it is time to start traveling even more off the beaten track - we love Latin America but do not want to see it become too "Americanized"

There is substantial and well funded opposition to new construction in the historic district. For example, it took Aranwa and Marriott many years to get approval to acquire historic buildings (lots of red tape involved) and do their interior renovations. I am very much in favor of this approach and hope Cusco continues their regulations.- Ω -
