Pico Bonita-Honduras

Syrene-1....this is a little "information overload" for this thread, but I didn't know any other way for you to read it. As you might guess, Mesoamrica holds more interest to me than just a tourist destination. Back in my university days, I spentsome time working in Chiapas, Mexico, andas such, developed huge respect for thecultures predating the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors.It's unfortunate that most of these ruins will never be fully explored and examinedbecause of a lack of funds in these Central American counties.

I don't know how they do it, but Spirit offers some amazing deals. I once went from NY to Bahamas for $9! How can you beat that?

We were in Honduras three years ago, and stayed at the Pico Bonita lodge, and I can verify that it is fantastic. Lovely, tasteful accomodations, within steps of a beautiful rainforest. We enjoyed all of Honduras - Copan, the Bay Islands, etc. - but Pico Bonita is truly special.

What an awesome post, Omegaet.I had the opportunity to visit Honduras in the early '90's. I went to Roatan and stayed at Anthony's Key Resort. Everyone literally stays on the ocean front in "huts". Fantastic diving, horse back riding, etc.



Copan was incredible, stunning to be exact. The memory of the ball field is seered into my mind.



The ONLY negative I can recount about Honduras is that on the trip from Copan to San Pedro, it was disconcerting to see the countryside denuded by logging and slash/burn. That was sad to see (and quite ugly, to be honest).



Regarding the city of San Pedro, there isn't much to see or do there.



Around Copan, many many archeologists & students from the University of Pennsylvania are there so if you like to chat about archeology, they were nice. The people & food were excellent as well.

Great RED HOT Deal to Pico Bonito being offered by LL....auction closes May 24, 2007! Wish we had the holiday time available to take advantage of this offer! Some one interested in "soft adventure" travelis going to get a real steal on this one!

I haven't read all of this blog, but I can assure readers that Pico Bonita is terrific. We loved the entire experience. The accomodations were great, as was the hiking and canoing. Go for it.

What about the travel auction to Pico Bonito in Honduras? Does it make sense to consider this trip with the current condition of the government?

I spoke to my friend who still has a business in San Pedro Sula (even though he moved back to LA). His wife is in Honduras right now and really hasn't had any problems (other than the 6:00 PM curfew).

Flights are operating in and out of the country and apparently, tourists are still coming and going. If I were considering Pico Bonito, I would check with the resort....if they told me they are open and receiving guests and the airline says they are oprating, I would make the trip.....why not? Just because the old president has been removed by the army shouldn't cause a problem for a tourist.
