Nice to see The Lodge at Pico Bonito back up for auction along with the Roatan, Honduras package. I have been to Roatan a few times but the only part of mainland Honduras I have been to is Copan - to see the Mayan site of course ;-) I also know the professor who was one of the chief excavators of the site - everyone in the little town knows his name and they love him!
Omegaet - didn't you do the Pico Bonito one when it was listed the 1st time - I though I had seen a mention that you were there?
Several years ago, we stayed there on a Luxury Link package. We had a wonderful time and were even visited for lunch one day by some friends who were living in Honduras at the time.Quote:

It is a destination that likely fits your profile for 'adventure and wildlife encounters.' The bird population is varied and easy to spot...as I recall we did encounter a few tapirs, spotted two deer crossing by the swimming pool one morning, and observed a number of white-faced and spider monkeys on several occasions. The hiking trails leading right out of the property are challenging at times (depending on how much rain has fallen), but the rewards of first encountering the various waterfalls and pristine pools (OK...we did skinny dip once....chilly) makes the sweat all worth while.
Pico continues to receive excellent reviews on most internet sites. Many of the 'less than positive' comments regarding the property (rained too much, food too expensive, no near by town to offer other restaurant choices, trails so muddy, etc.) seemed to have been posted by individuals who failed to do their research prior to travel.
When we discover that there is no little town within walking distance - we usually rent a car to explore so this would not be a problem for us. I will have to see how far the dates go into 2013 - do not want to go during the rainy season.
denise....not really any town within reasonable walking distance of Pico. You can hitch a ride with the resort shuttle or catch a local bus back into La Ceibe (where the airport is located)....few restaurants and a few shops - maybe something of interest to you.
Are you familiar with the Garifuna? There are several Garifuna settlements along the coast and there are some Garifuna bands that play in some of the local bars.
We did have one of the guides from Pico take us over to a Garifuna coast settlement for a couple of hours one afternoon....interesting experience,,,,especially watching the fisherman return with their catch.
I have been to Roatan a few times and there are some Garifuna there - totally different atmosphere and culture from the rest of Honduras. Also Garifuna in Belize
Hopkins Village has a strong influence of Garifuna. I think you will be going there???? (Jaguar Reef?)
Decided against Jag Reef since so many reviews talked about the bad biting bugs in the area no matter what time of the year you go!
