I loved the old SA and CA airports - the one in Guatemala City was one of my favorites and I don't like their new airport - I guess they have to modernize to address the needs of 1st world travelers and if they want to attract more visitors from the USA, then they unfortunately have to cater to what they demand. I have not been in the Quito airport since 2001 but I liked it - it was fun!
The airport issue sounds like a mess in Quito. I think the problem is more about the roads and accessing the airport than the airport itself. The new airport will be about 1 hour from the city whereas the existing airport is basically in the city. The roads to and from need to be updated.
Quito, Ecuador’s new international airport, Mitad Del Mundo, is expected to be operational and open by October 2012. The new airport is located in the Tababaela Valley, about 11 miles northeast of Quito and is a 45-60 minute taxi ride from the airport to the center of Quito . Quito is the most popular arrival point for travelers proceeding to the Galapagos Islands. However,
passengers traveling to Galapagos, and who require only one night stay before or after a cruise, should consider flying into Guayaquil (GYE) as a more convenient alternative than Quito.
Hi LL...there is updated info that has just been announced. The date is extended to February 20th. At that time they hope to have the roads and airport functioning. It is still a concern if this is possible.
