Anyone done the Chiapas region of Mexico?
Hi all,
I am looking at some LL packages for the late fall/early winter and am thinking of some add ones that I can do for areas that there are no LL packages - I can do Mexico city again through LL and add another LL package on for a beach resort or something but we have always wanted to go to Oaxca, San Cristobal de los Casas and then up to Palenque - I have heard these regions are a bit difficult to get to (except for oaxca - that is about a 4 hour drive from Mexico City) - anyone been to this area of Mexico?
thanks
D

Denise......I worked in several areas of Chiapas and lived in San Cristóbal de las Casas for approximately six months.....however, since that was many years ago, I know my insights would be greatly dated. Something that hasn't change much, if at all, is the beautiful mountainous terrain, the warm and welcoming locals and the interesting and mostly undiscovered or at least unexploited ruins.

11-06-2011, 11:12 AMDenise, just in case this article did not appear in your local newspapers:
Mexico’s Maya - Latin American & Caribbean Travel - MiamiHerald.com
Ms. Nadle talks about the three major main tribes — Chamulas, Huistechos, Zinacantechos in her article. I had the privilege of working in Zinacantan for several months, which she indicates is now all but deserted. Even when I worked there, the men were having major difficulties in getting sustainable crop yields and more and more of them were starting to leave to find jobs in other areas. Sounds like them have not improved, but gotten more difficult.
As you can read, there are lots of historic and cultural experiences to explore in the region. I doubt 'luxury' properties are in the development plans in the near future.....when that starts to happen, imo, the Chiapas region will have lost so much of it's charm. Go soon and experience what it has to offer.Last edited by omegaet; 11-13-2011 at 05:48 AM. Reason: spelling

Good article - this part of Mexico is on my list of places to go - I wish there were some LL packages in the Oaxca area San Cristobal de los Casas. It is a tough area to get around - especially if you want to do Palenque and the other Mayan sites along the river border with Guatemala. There is a hotel in San Cristobal that has been on auction on SkyAuction quite frequently and very reasonable but as long as I find good LL packages, I have not spent much time researching do it ourselves trips.
