After looking through several areas we settled on the Blue Tulum Resorts in Tulum Mexico. We are renting a car from Cancun and driving down since it's the same cost basically as the transportation they provide. Are there any concerns with driving from Cancun -> Tulum?
Also for those that have been in Tulum are there any places that you migth suggest we visit?

Re: Tulum Mexico - Any Suggestions
There is an excellent thread in tripadvisor.com regarding "Bribes/police"
We had a minor encounter a few yrs ago, and it's wothrwhile to have the ammo to diffuse a "pullover" by local cops. They offer one price "cash" to pay them or double at the station. Follow the advice of many TA regs. Print the recommended directions on how to handle it on the spot.
It's unlikely to be a problem, but why not be prepared.
PS--when you pick up your car, pay attention to where the gas station is for filling on the return. You may have to pass it to come back around. Be cautious driving thru Playa del Carmen, too.
Tulum--?? ruins!"wherever you go, there you are"

Could you expand a bit on the police issue? I went over to TA but I hate that site cause it's so cluttered and hard to navigate. Could you link me the url you were talking about for that discussion?
Thanks,
- John

Was in the Cancun/Tulum area about 1 year ago and the roads are very easy to navigate - just pay attention to the speedlimits and where the gas stations are (watch very carefully when getting gas and make sure the amount to pay area on the pump says 0 ) We really liked going to Xcaret and Xel Ha - 2 eco parks between Playa del Carmen and Tulum - both get tourists but a very nice day can be had - we prefer Xel - Ha since it does not seem to get as many tourists - for about $40US per person (it may have gone up since I was there )you can spend the day snorkeling and swimming in their great lagoon and it includes lunch and drinks - the food was pretty good. We have rented cars in Mexico everytime we have been there - Cancun area and western Yucatan - Merida, Campeche, Valloidad, etc. and have never had a problem with the police.

Yes, visit Tulum Ruins, and if not too hot, Coba. We loved Xcaret, tho' a bit commercial, it was fun, especially for kids. We liked Blue Tulum, a great value all-inclusive, but think it changed ownership and will undergo some kinds of changes after August.
