Sauble Beach

It looks just like many of the beaches in Florida. Endless expanse of low, flat shoreline made up of golden sand with a modest ridge of dune further back from the water. Sparkling blue water offshore broken up by a seemingly endless succesion of waves marching onto the shore and crashing on the sand with the sound of rushing thunder. But, this beach lies well over 1,000 miles north of Florida on the eastern shores of Lake Michigan (not more than a couple of hour's drive north of Detroit/Windsor)in the Province of Ontario in Canada!



Located totally on lands owned and managed by a local Indian band, this beach has some unique features. No development's permitted on the beach itself, but outsiders are allowed to lease land well back from the water's edge and to build summer cottages. Commercial advertising signs don't detract from the pristine scenery, except for those along the narrow road that parallels the shoreline some distance to the east, where souvenir shops,hot dog and ice cream stands, and some low-rise motels are situated.



Despite its relatively northern location, the waters along the beach are unusually warm in summer, mainly because of the shallowness of the lake. One can walk several hundred feet out from the shore, over a series of low sandbars and still only be in waist-high water. The beach is very safe for swimming, ideal for children, and a haven for picnics and recreational activities (like kiting, beach volleyball).
