El Meco was a major commercial port city for the Mayas. Due to it's close proximity to Isla Mujeres, it was a departure point for Mayans sailing to the island, and was also an important reference point for coastal navigation. It's location also helped it gain strength as a religious center, associated with rituals held on Isla Mujeres.
The site has only 14 structures, and the main temple is in good condition. From the top of El Castillo, the pyramid at El Meco, there is a great view of Cancun's Chacmochuc Lagoon, however guests are no longer allowed to climb on the ruins. El Meco has only been open to the public for a short time. For that reason, there are no organized tours, at this time. To get here, you will have to rent a car or hire a taxi for a few hours.
