For years, I had wanted to experience the High Tea at this iconic hotel, and overall it was a pleasant afternoon. We were warmly looked after by Anelisa, whose service was friendly and attentive, and the selection of savoury and sweet treats was extensive and beautifully presented. However, I was surprised that we were not offered a choice of tea. Instead, tea was simply served to the table, despite tea being the central element of the experience. It was only during the final course, after I specifically asked, that I was able to choose a tea that suited my preferences. At a five-star hotel, and at a price of R650 per person, I would expect a more personalised approach. Being able to select your tea from the outset seems like a small detail, but it is precisely these details that distinguish a luxury experience from a more mass-market one. Unfortunately, this took away some of the sense of occasion I had been looking forward to for many years. That said, the quality of the food and the service from Anelisa were both excellent.
