With the oldest part dating back to 1225, Heidelberg's castle continues to exude its dominance over the city's Old Town. For over 400 years, the castle was the main residence of the Counts Palatine and proved to be a versatile center for culture and controversy in the region. Any visit to Heidelberg would not be complete without a walk through the castle gardens, a tour of Elector Friedrich II's chambers, first built in 1544, or a drop by the world's largest wine cask, which can hold 221,726 L of liquid. Also located within the castle walls is the world's most extensive exhibition related to the history of pharmacy in the German Apothecary Museum. This permanent exhibition along with the castle are open from 8am to 5pm daily and is 5 euros for adults, 3 euros for students, seniors and children and free if you purchase the Heidelberg Card (more information available here http://www.tourism-heidelberg.com).
