Marienplatz has been the central sqaure of Munich since its founding by Henry the Lion in 1158. It was originally named Schrannenplatz and once held the salt and grain market, but it is now used by the city for various concerts and events, but mainly by tourists trying to get photos of the old and new town halls. After the market was moved around the corner starting in 1807, the square was renamed Marienplatz. The statue of Mary has stood in the center of Marienplatz since 1638 and is the reason of the new name of the square.

Probably Munich's most photographed building, the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) was built between 1867 and 1908. The most famous part of the town hall is the Glockenspiel which does its thing twice a day (11am and noon) every day of the year, with an additional performance at 5pm from May through October. You can also visit the top of the tower by taking an elevator up to the ninth floor.

The small, but impressive, church was built by two regionally famous brothers Cosmas and Damian Asam. The official name of the church is the Church of St. Johann-Nepomuk, but everyone knows it only as the Asamkirch (Asam church) for the brothers who built it. The outside is striking, but once you enter the door you will understand why your tour guide pointed out this spot which isn't on most local tours. Open daily during normal church hours.

The original Neuhauser Tor served as Munich's western city gate until Elector Karl Theodor had the city walls demolished in 1791 to open the city up for easier commerce. The original gate was demolished as well, but a commemorative gate was built and named Karlstor after Elector Karl Theodor. The entire platz was redesigned by the archetect Gabriel von Siedl between 1899 and 1902. Most visitors to Munich enter the old town through this gate as the main train station is to the west of the old town.

During the 17th century, no longer needing the protection of the stone-walled Festung, the Prince-Archbishops moved to the more opulent surroundings of the Residenz. The present complex, the site of a residence since 1110, was begun by Archbishop Wold Dietrich von Raitenau before 1600 but not completed before the 18th century. Passing through the impressive marble portal that faces the imposing Residenz fountain, you enter the main courtyard. Opposite, under the arches of the portico, stands the Hercules fountain. The stairway to the left of the fountain leads to the splendid reception rooms. An informative audio guide, included with admission, details the elaborately decorated formal chambers and their furnishings. Note especially the ceiling frescos and stucco ceiling decorations in the private rooms designed for the Archbishop's brother. read more about State Rooms - Residenz

The first and last of Munich's city gates for Munich's second set of city walls, the Isartor, was built in 1337. Kaiser Ludwig IV the Bavarian had second city wall built to protect the expanding city and the wall remained until the late 1700's. All of the other city gates were eventually torn down or dramatically modified, but the Isartor remains quite close to its original look. It was restored between 1833 and 1835 by Friedrich von Gärtner. The murals were painted in 1835 and depict the victorious return of Ludwig IV the Bavarian to Munich after the battle of Ampfing in 1322. The Isartor is today used as part of the Valentin Museum as well as a cafe.

Salzburg's signature landmark, Festung Hohensalzburg ("High Salzburg Fortress") sits atop rocky Mönchsberg ("Monks Mountain"), dominating the Altstadt. Located on the site of a Roman defensive outpost, the fortress was begun in 1077 by Prince-Archbishop Gebhard von Helfenstein. Much of its present form is due to the expansive building program conducted by Count Paris of Lodron in the 17th century as he strengthened the city's defenses during the Thirty Years War. One of the largest medieval castles in Europe, the Festung offers a fascinating look into the history of Salzburg. Many of its chambers and courtyards are open to view, including the brilliant painted and gilded state rooms. The Golden Room, with its magnificent wood panelling and carving, is especially interesting. You can get to the Festung via the Festungsbahn, a funicular train that climbs straight up the hillside. Or you can climb the mountain by foot, taking the wide path that doubles back as it ascends. (Continue past the entrance to the funicular ticket office and bear right after passing the beer hall.) read more about Fortress Hohensalzburg (Festung Hohensalzburg)

The Hofbräuhaus is arguably the most famous beer hall in the world. At one time it was the royal wheat beer brewery, but as of 1896 it is a beer hall (Bavarian restaurant). No matter what anyone says, if there is only one place you eat at in Munich, make it the Hofbräuhaus. Music every day from 3pm until 11pm. Food prices are actually slightly cheaper than any of its supposed rivals, although the beer is slightly more (about 20 cents a liter more). Either way, you can have a good meal for around €10 and the beer costs €6.90 a liter. Put on some lederhosen and enjoy!

Tucked away between the Mönchsberg's eastern precipice and the Festung is the oldest existing nunnery in the German-speaking part of Europe, Convent Nonnberg. Founded in 700, its religious life as a convent has never been interrupted. The Gothic church is entered from the quiet courtyard where generations of nuns are buried. It is famous for its magnificent 15th century winged altar. Also of great interest are the remarkably moving 12th century murals under the nuns' choir in the back of the church. More recently, Nonnberg is famous as the convent where the real-life Maria was a novice before becoming governess to the von Trapp children. During the filming of The Sound of Music, the convent was used for some exterior shots. (Interior shots were filmed in Hollywood.) The church and courtyard are open until dusk or 7 pm in the summer, except during mass, when it is closed to viewing. You can reach it on foot in one of three ways: From Festunggasse, continue past the entrance to the funicular ticket office and bear left after passing the beer hall then follow the fairly level road; climb Nonnbergstiege (Nonnberg stair), the long set of steps reached from Kaigasse; or from the Nonntal district through a narrow alley. read more about Convent Nonnberg

Enjoy a glass of wine, beer or a cocktail in this stylish nightclub in the Neustadt (right bank). A Salzburg fixture since 1970, during Festival times, you can sometimes glimpse some of the big names relaxing in its remarkable interior. Its high, vaulted ceiling is carved from an old salt cellar. The effect of the lighting is unique. As well as drinks, toasts – hot sandwiches – are available. Its list of Austrian wines is particularly good. read more about Chez Roland

The Theatinerkirche is one of the most striking, both inside and out, in Munich. Electress Henriette Adelaide and her husband Elector Ferdinand Maria had it built on the occasion of the birth of their first male child, which gave them a successor. Elector Ferdinand first began construction of Nymphenburg palace to thank his wife and then started on the Theatinerkirche to thank god.
The church was built in Italian high-baroque style after San Andrea del Valle in Rome and designed by the Italian architect Agostino Barelli. His successor, Enrico Zuccalli, added two towers, which originally were not planned and then finished the 71 meter (233 ft) high dome in 1690. The facade in rococo style was completed only in 1768 by François de Cuvilles. Its Mediterranean appearance and yellow coloring became a well known symbol for the city and had much influence on Southern German baroque architecture.
Much of the interior was destroyed in bombing, but the towers and facade are mostly original. This church also serves as one of the two main burial places for the Wittelsbach family, who ruled Bavaria from 1180 until 1918.

Gem of the Neustadt, Schloss Mirabell was built for his mistress and mother of his children by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau in 1606. The Baroque-style building that stands today was extensively remodeled in the 18th century and again, after a fire, in the 19th century. The official residence of the Mayor of Salzburg, little of it can be seen by the public. However, during office hours, the reception area with its ornate Barockstiege-Englesstiege (angel staircase) can be seen. It leads to the marble-and-gold Marmorsaal, a hall where lunchtime and evening concerts of chamber music are held. Also found in the courtyard of Schloss Mirabell are the Barockmuseum, housing sketches and preliminary works by Baroque artists, and a horticultural conservatory. read more about Schloss Mirabell (Mirabell Palace)

Winding through the core of the Altstadt, Getreidegasse may be the most charming street in Salzburg. The thoroughfare originated in Roman times. And it was here, in No 9, that Mozart was born and lived until he was 17. The buildings that line this long street date from Medieval times. Today they're elaborately decorated with wrought-iron signs, dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries, fashioned according to traditions that go back to the Middle Ages. Its length is punctuated by small lanes that lead to courtyards and platzes in other parts of the city. The shops themselves feature a mixture of luxury jewellery, leather goods and fashion, tracht – traditionally styled clothing – restaurants and cafes, chocolates, wine and spirits, souvenirs, and more. Getreidegasse can be extremely crowded, so it's best to visit early in the day. Or stroll along in the evening when the colorful shop window displays seem to sparkle magically. read more about Getreidegasse
