Lumaha'i Beach is the type of perfect tropical beach common on travel agency walls.  Pristine soft white sand blends with deep blue water here. Although the beach is heavenly, the rip tide at Lumaha'i is a treacherous one, and haunts the water on most days except for the calmest ones. The ocean should not be entered unless the waves are flat, or close to it. Look for the beach after mile marker 5 off of Highway 56.

Black lava-rock cliffs provide a back drop to part of the beach, as well as tall iron wood trees that provide shade for the best parking area. An emergency phone is located across the street from the iron wood parking area. The Lumaha'i River is at the west end of the beach, the the beach is long enough for a substantial walk. As with many locations on Kaua'i, Hollywood once utilized Lumaha'i in the film South Pacific. If you find an infamous sunrise shell here, leave it be. The state doesn't allow sea shells to be taken off the island.
