Interview with The Royal Hawaiian Field Marketing Manager Celia Tamashiro
A) The Royal Hawaiian is an 85-year-old resort with a rich cultural history and legacy. Restored and modernized to suit the needs of contemporary travelers, The Royal Hawaiian has embraced advancement yet committed to retaining its pink facade, Spanish-Moorish architecture, classic ambiance and authentic Hawaiian hospitality of its legendary history.
Q) Is there a “must try” signature dish or drink that guests should experience?
A) There is more than one dish and drink that are must-tries! Pancakes and French toast are the ever-popular breakfast items at Surf Lanai Restaurant, the Pupu Platter at the Mai Tai Bar is a must, and Azure Restaurant’s Sashimi and daily catch are both heaven on a plate. Top this off with a slice of Signature Pink Cake, a specialty from The Royal Bake Shop.
Thirsty? The Royal Hawaiian is reputed to have served The Royal Hawaiian is reputed to have served the very first Shirley Temple, as well as the first Mai Tai in Hawai'i. Our original Mai Tai remains a favorite among guests and locals alike. To kick it up a notch, try the Smokin' Mai Tai!
Q) What are the three things about your property that guests may not know?
A) 1 - The Royal Hawaiian sits on the land that the Hawaiian royalty used to live on. 2 - The garden oasis that surrounds our resort is believed to be the site of a legendary creation: a phantom rooster allegedly scratched the earth at King Kamehameha I’s feet while he was standing on the grounds of Helumoa. Viewing this as an omen, the King planted a single coconut on that very spot, which is said to have grown and spread its life, forming the entire palm-lined gardens of The Royal Hawaiian today. Not surprisingly, the Hawaiian people view the Coconut (Nui) to be a simple of life, abundance and renewal. 3 - Our bartender's make a fabulous drink that is not featured on the menu. It is called none other than, The Pink Palace.

I have now stayed at the Royal Hawaiian three times with Luxury Link packages and have never been disappointed! The staff are all courteous and friendly—some have been there for over 30 years!—and the quality of the service is exceptional. Arranging dates and package events was handled very professionally and helpfully by the hotel staff in person and via email. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a serene, graceful and extremely scenic stay right on Waikiki Beach!
