About the Hotel

Waves crash near the lanais of Koa Kea Hotel & Resort's oceanfront guestrooms, a collection of low-profile buildings that blend with the nature around them. Inside, fresh flowers accent simple, modern island décor and art prints of coral. Koa Kea means "white coral," a tribute to the life-giving power of the reefs. According to Hawaiian mythology, coral is the goddess granddaughter of the world’s creator. From November to May, Koa Kea’s slice of the Pacific hosts a migration of humpback whales, so keep an eye to the horizon.

Reviews for Koa Kea Hotel & Resort

We would definitely stay here again!

The staff was welcoming, professional, helpful and they took very good care of us. Our room was clean and the decor was a nice elegant island vibe. We found our bed to be comfortable - not too soft or hard. I appreciate nice touches like offering glass demitasse cups for the Nespresso instead of just the standard paper cups. I also very much appreciate that the hotel is keen on recycling and protecting their environment. We enjoyed the smaller more boutique nature of Koa Kea Resort.

Not worth the price

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 days ago

Unfortunately, this hotel does not live up to the hype. The staff was friendly, and the hotel was clean and the room was fine. If we had been paying $500 a night or less, we might have been ok with it. However, at almost $1000 a night for a double bed room with partial ocean view, I felt duped. We often pay that amt for high end hotels, but this did not warrant the price. The room size, amenities, limited beach access (it was blocked off by the property next door) and lack of extra touches, made it not worth it. The pool crowd seemed older or family oriented, maybe popular with Canadians? Also, zero shuttle to nearby restaurants, thank god for Doug, a local running his own shuttle for tips. Otherwise you are on your own walking along the highway to get anywhere at night. Ubers are almost nonexistent in this area. I only wish we had more positive things to say about the property as the staff seems well intended. If you can find a deal online for it, it might be worth it.

Lovely Hotel - with one safety concern

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 days ago

Ko'a Kea is perfect for a couple's getaway. Location on the beach is amazing, sushi bar is great for a more lowkey dinner experience, and the beach chairs facing the ocean are wonderful for watching the sun set. My one concern is that when my pregnant wife and I checked into our room, we noticed that there was a Sailnovo 6000mg/h Ozone Generator Machine plugged in and running in our room. We had no idea what it was, but noticed that it had a manufacturer's label that said "not for use in occupied spaces." When we looked it up, we learned that Ozone at high concentrations irritates the lungs and airways. At 6,000 mg/h, this machine puts out far more ozone than any safe indoor exposure level. Once we read this, my wife immediately left the room to sit outside. She was anxious and didn't know how long the machine had been running, or what her exposure level might have been. It's recommended to let the room air out for 30 mins to 2 hours before re-occupying the room. Since we had arrived after a long day of activities, we were not in a position to wait to let the room air out - we needed to shower etc. The front desk was initially dismissive, telling us that it is safe for us to stay in the room, but that they would send housekeeping. When I went back a second time and asked them to allow us to move rooms - they agreed and apologized. Ultimately I appreciate how it was handled, but I am concerned that the hotel is improperly using these devices in occupied spaces without protocol in place to keep people safe. On the device, there was a label (I assume the hotel's label) "must approve sup before sign out" This implies there is some sort of control over their use; in our circumstance it fell through the cracks. Would love to return to the hotel, but I might think twice.

The Koa Kea was top notch! We loved every minute. Beautiful landscaping, rooms nicely appointed and great quality sheets and towels and superb housekeeping. Red Salt restaurant was perfect and delicious. Breakfast, meals, and wait staff were wonderful, especially Raven - our waiter most days. Not one negative about this boutique hotel. Will return again.
