Mapplethorpe Meets Michelangelo in Florence

Florence “Robert Mapplethorpe: Perfection in Form” at the Galleria dell’Accademia (through January 10, 2010). The 20th-century photographer, who died 20 years ago, was known both for his obsession with a particular idealization of the human body and sculptural play of light. In an unprecedented and unusual show, more than 90 of Mapplethorpe’s works share space with the celebrated sculptures of Michelangelo, including David, in an exhibition juxtaposing America photography and Italian Renaissance art.
