Mexico is a country that likes its glorietas (traffic circles). Besides providing a major driving challenge, glorietas are gathering places for the citizens of the Guadalajara metropolitan area. Many glorietas have statues to honor Mexico´s heros. Others have ornate gazebos where musicians and singers perform and major historical events are celebrated. Glorieta Chapalita is such a glorieta. Every Sunday afternoon (generally between 4 and 6) local artists display their paintings, statues and crafts. It is a major attraction for tourists looking for bargains to take home. Members of the Guadalajara Philharmonic are there playing classical and popular music, adding to the excitement of the day. At midnight on September 16, Mexican independence from Spain is celebrated. A political leader will imitate the call to arms (la grita) issued originally by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, urging everyone to fight for liberty.  It is a proud moment for all Mexicans.
