Set along the northwestern edge of the United States, Oregon is defined by dramatic natural landscapes and a strong connection to the outdoors. The state stretches from the Pacific coastline to volcanic mountain ranges and high desert terrain, with scenery that changes noticeably depending on which direction you drive. Rainfall defines much of western Oregon's landscape, giving rise to dense evergreen forests that rest on rugged cliffs and rivers that cut through deep valleys.
Along the coast, Highway 101 winds past weathered fishing towns and beaches where sea mist hangs low over the shoreline and secluded coves are tucked into the escarpment. In Cannon Beach, Haystack Rock rises directly from the sand, often surrounded by tide pools and nesting puffins. Further south near Cape Perpetua, waves crash into narrow volcanic channels at Thor’s Well, sending seawater high into the air during rough weather. Some of the best luxury resorts in Oregon are found along this coastline, cradled between pine forests and the Pacific.
Inland, the Willamette Valley is known for Pinot Noir vineyards and farm-driven food culture, while central Oregon becomes drier and more rugged around Bend and Smith Rock State Park, where hiking, fly-fishing, and rock climbing are part of daily life.
Most travelers arrive through Portland before continuing by road, which remains one of the best ways to experience the state’s constantly changing landscapes.
