Fuente Mardoqueo os one of a afew sandwich shops that outdoes itsself on traditional favorites like the chacarero, fajita-style beef strips on a bun with juicy tomatoes and a pile of stringbeans, or the barros jarpa (ham and melted cheese), or any sandwich you can invent with the ingredients they have on hand, which range from tuna to pickles to girlled beef, and avocado.
There are twelve dressings or sauces to choose from, which you can apply to your sandwich yourself, under their kithcy collection of antique teacups, sewing machines and clocks. You'll be one of many if you come for lunch or after work, but during the afternoon it is much less crowded.
A small sandwich is gigantic, and a large is extreme, so tread with caution and bring a healthy appetite.

Wandering around República, the area south of the Alameda (Avenida Liberador Bernardo O'Higgins) is hungry work. It's an area with a high concentration of universities and institutes (technical schools) and as such, there are a host of affordable eateries.
The best sandwiches in this part of town, and in fact, some of the best food is to be had at Cheveríssimo, which means "way cool," a Peruvian sandwich shop with giant portions of tasty suckling pig, turkey and other options, served with the sauce of your choice, including olive, spicy and a mild, creamy huacatay sauce that melts on the tongue. You can also add shoestring fried potatoes to your meal, and although it's not on the menu, there's an excellent vegetarian sandwich with a couple of eggs (if you like), tomatoes, avocado and lettuce. The bread is homemade and light and actually holds together to eat with your hands, though most people will prefer a knife and fork.
The smallest size, which is plentiful for most appetites is around $4 US (2,100 Chilean pesos). Drinks are the standards with the addition of a a few Peruvian favorites, like Inka Cola.

A restaurants chain focused on pollos a la brasa (Peruvian roasted chicken), barbecue specialties and some creole food, too: reasonable prices, nice and joyful atmosphere, although it can be a little noisy since most of these restaurants have radio and TV on. Try also the anticuchos and the Lomo Saltado (sauted beef).

If you're looking for good food that will fill you up without blowing the budget, Bar do Arnaudo is the place to come. This traditional, homely restaurant (no, it's not actually a bar…) serves delicious food from the North East of Brazil in absolutely enormous portions. The set meals for one easily serve two or even three – take your pick from sundried meat or queijo coalho (a hard white cheese, similar to halloumi, served grilled), with brown beans, yucca, rice and pumpkin farofa (toasted seasoned yucca flour). Wash it down with a large, ice cold bottle of beer to share, or - even better – a delicious coconut or passionfruit batida. These creamy drinks are made with fruit, condensed milk and cachaca, the sugar cane rum that is Brazil's national drink. Beware, however, that although they may taste innocent they really pack a punch! read more about Bar do Arnaudo

In a city where meat rules the culinary roost, vegetarians can feel like social outcasts at times. However, this cafe-restaurant in super-fashionable Leblon offers delicious, entirely organic dishes with no animal ingredients, all served up in a relaxed environment. The lunch buffet is good value at less than R$24, while the evening a-la-carte options are good too. Bag one of the two pavement tables, order a wine (organic, of course), and prepare for a meat-free feast.
