This fortress was built for the Muslim governors of the city who served under King Badis, ruler of the Zirid Dynasty (of Berber origin). Construction began in the 8th century, and most of the fortress was completed by the middle of the 11th century. It was later joined with the nearby Palacio de Gibralfaro in the 14th century. The Alcazaba was well-designed for defensive purposes, with thirty towers and twenty gates, making entrance through its outer and inner walls very difficult. This attraction is popular not only for its historical significance but also because of the views of the Plaza de Toros and the rest of the city, including the port. There is an elevator available that carries visitors to the top, but you'll want to walk down to get the full experience.
