Your First Time In Barcelona

One of the only city's where you can be skiing at 9am and surfing by 5pm, Barcelona has the laid back ambiance of a beach town with the vibrancy of a cosmopolitan city.
A definite must see for a first timer in Barcelona, is the old city, or 'ciutat vella.' Spanning everything below Plaza Catalunya, areas such as the Gotico, Born, Barceloneta and the Raval, feature windy alleyways, boutique shops, niche cafes and above all, an incredible rich history with stunning architecture. Divided down the middle by the famous, Las Ramblas walkway, everything in the old city is accessible via foot and easy to find.
Moving away from downtown, venture into the more modern, Eixample district, directly above Plaza Catalunya. This area boasts wider streets with more mainstream and elegant stores, as well as an incredible selection of yummy yet affordable restaurants.
This area is also accessible via foot or public transport. There's definitely no need to rent a car if you're staying in the city. In fact it's harder to get around with a car. Public transport is efficient and everywhere and if you feel inclined to rent something, opt for a small motorbike. Barcelona is extremely scooter friendly and it's a welcome change from walking every now and then.

One of Barcelona's greatest attractions and one of the few that are absolutely free, is Gaudi's incredible Park Guell. Get anywhere near the Vallcarca stop on the green line and you'll see tourists lumped together, maps in hand, asking locals for Park 'Guay'. Designed and built by Gaudi between 1900 and 1914, this spectacular mix of garden, park and architectural dream is a small oasis within Barcelona. From the mosaic benches, to the meticulously tiled rooftops, Park Guell is both fascinating as it is serene.
