A massive mound of pink granite protrudes nearly 430 feet from the earth roughly 90 miles southwest of Austin, beckoning to hikers and campers throughout central Texas. This 1,640-acre area near Fredericksburg, Texas, known as Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, holds one of the largest underground rock formations ever uncovered by erosion in the United States. Trails leading to the dome's top are plentiful and camping at the base is a popular activity year-round. In 1984, Enchanted Rock joined the ranks of protected sites with its addition to the National Register of Historic Places, as archaeologists dated human visitation to the Rock back at least 11,000 years.
