Reviews for Cottage Grove Inn

UNPROFESSIONAL and UNHEALTHY

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 months ago

My husband and I experience the WORST stay of our lives here. What’s worse is the owners’ refusal to make anything right. Soon after we arrived and were hoping to relax next to the fire, a noxious odor began to infiltrate the cottage. We contacted the innkeeper, who came in and immediately agreed that there was a bad odor coming from the fireplace. She suggested changing to another cottage, which emitted the same noxious odor as the first cottage we were staying in. She said the fireplaces had recently been serviced. We think some harsh chemical was used to clean or service them. The innkeeper suggested that we spend our vacation time finding a cottage that didn’t have a smell, while she attended to other things. That should have been her responsibility. We ended up having leave the windows open all night along in December! We contacted the inn after our stay and they said they acknowledged that there was a foul smelling odor, but said “It's our sincere hope that our offer of a different cottage and the complementary wine will demonstrate our dedication to ensuring your future experiences with us are delightful and stress-free, in line with the visits you've had in the past.” They offered us a cheap bottle of wine to compensate for a cold, stressful, toxic night. The offer for a “different cottage” was no offer at all: we tried another cottage and it was just as foul smelling due to the fireplaces being serviced. And the innkeeper did not assist us with finding another cottage because she was too busy. This place used to be beloved to us. This experience has caused us to do further research in the Cottage Grove Inn business to see if we were not the only ones who has experienced this. We read reviews on various sites. Several guests have left negative reviews recently. Some of these complaints are very alarming, such as non-compliance with ADA rules, faulty smoke and carbon monoxide detectors that required a 911 call and a visit from the fire department, fraudulent credit card charges, poor management, customers feeling they were treated rudely by the manager, and an extreme decline in quality in the last year, charging more and offering less. It appears this business has undergone a change in ownership in the last few years, being purchased from its longtime owners. As returning and longtime customers, we (myself and my husband) feel that we have been disrespected and treated poorly. We hoped that we would be treated with more respect with an offer for a resolution due to this incident. We are reporting this Inn and its owners to the Department of Consumer Affairs and the California Department of Public Health. For your own health and well-being, we advise to stay away from Cottage Grove Inn.

Cute cottages with some comforts but in desperate need of an update!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 months ago

We visited in August 2019 for one night only and again last week, October 2023 for 3 nights. We remembered liking the place but didn’t have enough time so we planned a longer stay. It was not exactly how we remembered! The cottages are cute and clean, with comfortable beds and pillows. The breakfast was not what we remembered at all. There was basically only a variety of 2 breads and croissants one morning. The next morning there was only a single loaf of baked bread and tangerines. We were initially told by phone to be in the breakfast room by 8:30 or it would all be gone! Apparently it doesn’t even open until 8. Not at all anything to get excited about. We ended up going to Bella Bakery which was phenomenal for fresh croissants and other items. Also the rooms need an update! The bathroom is a complete waste of space with a massive whirlpool and a very small square shower. The shower head doesn’t move so you can’t escape the direct stream. The overhead light flickered constantly. The makeup mirror is loosely attached and swings crooked hitting the mirror. Also the internet is very low speed. The room is quite small and there is not a good place to put your suitcase. Is they remodeled and ripped out the whirlpool the bathroom was be great. I can’t imagine anyone would even use the whirlpool which looks to be from the 70’s and likely bacteria laden jets!

Rudest staff in all of Napa

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 7 months ago

The cottage grove inn office manager was rude and imperious. We left a day early instead of dealing with her neurosis. Unaccommodating, greedy and the anthesis of hospitality. Would recommend a colonoscopy over dealing with the staff. More pleasant.

Our new favorite place to stay in Calistoga

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 8 months ago

This instantly became our favorite place in Calistoga (Sorry, Indian Springs!). (My wife claims she wants to move here.) Dog-friendly, though targeted to smaller dogs. I was sure this place was built in the 30's and later upgraded, but no, it was built in the 90's by a clever architect. Individual cottages are strewn through palm trees. A few of the cottages have mini-gardens with outdoor chairs, which I would reserve when I return. Great beds and the rooms have coffeemakers and a mini-fridge (and wine glasses!) Luxurious linens and a great soaking tub. A continental breakfast is included, but it's certainly worth checking out Sam's General Store which is across the street, and is a coffee house with a number of breakfast items, and a 10% discount for Cottage Grove guests. The Inn is downtown, so easy walking to a number of excellent eating places.

Birthday, anniversary trip, first time to Napa area

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed March 11, 2023

I wanted so much to love this place but it was disappointing on so many levels. The cottages are small and we were constantly moving things around for our luggage, a place to sit, places to put the throw pillows. The cottage had an ant problem due to the season and the rain. The bathroom has not been updated in 30 years, the shower is something from a high school gymnasium, and they were not generous with towels, soap, etc. The bathroom has a separate heating system you need to turn on so it was cold and uncomfortable to walk into the bathroom with the tile floor, etc. They do not provide daily housekeeping and asking for it is a bit of a circular conversation until it happens. We ended up leaving a day early due to our disappointment with the lodging. The positives were that the cottage (aside from the ants) were clean upon arrival. It was nice they provided a yoga mat in the room, but you have to move furniture to have space to use it. The bed was comfortable, although making the bed was unpleasant. It was pricey for what it was and we, unfortunately, forfeited the last night as they refused to discuss any refund.
