With eighteen miles of powdery sands and shimmering ocean vistas Cumberland Island is a secluded Eden just off Georgia's southern coast. Populated by wild horses, deer, birds and other creatures, Cumberland is timeless, protected and pristine. Many consider its finest treasure to be the stunning Greyfield Inn – a grand and graceful mansion – built at the turn of the century for Andrew Carnegie’s niece. Today, the furnishings and style remain true to its history. Greyfield Inn offers 16 comfortable rooms in the main house and two additional cottages.

Cumberland Island is stunning. The Greyfield Inn, less so. The inn charges worldclass prices and provides average quality. Our room featured a cracked window, antique dressers that were missing handles, chipped paint, and a shower that lacked hot water until we complained and the staff rectified the problem. We had various insects in our bed, including a tick and a small caterpillar. The meals were good, however all alcohol (and they pair each of the three courses with a wine) is added to your bill. The same is true with cocktail hour. For these prices, a complimentary glass of wine with dinner would have been nice. The staff was very courteous and professional. Despite that, we felt we should have received much higher quality for our money.

Island is gorgeous and history bountiful. The Inn, not so much. IMO, not worth the cost. Subpar self-service with very little attention to detail. The Inn is so tired, worn and in need of a historical facelift (to keep integrity of the time). And the staff feels forced to accommodate guests and rush you to finish the communal dining to be done for the day. You are your own server and bartender except for dinner, so nothing special. I’m glad I experienced the island, but no need to spend that amount of money at the “Holiday” Inn.

We went to the Greyfield to get off the grid a bit and to celebrate a milestone. Everything from arrival to our comfort, to the attentiveness of the staff, to the many details considered for guests make this an incredible place. We went for bike rides, beach walks, and visited the many historical spots. We only opted for the garden tour but daily there were optional, free tours for guests. The food was exceptional (I am a foodie) and each day a feast for the senses. The wine list and cocktail offerings were curated with the seasoned palate in mind. I highly recommend the Greyfield for solo travelers, couples or folks interested in putting digital life in airplane mode for a few days to reconnect with what really matters. Thank you, Greyfield, for an incredibly comfortable, fun and tasteful stay!

My husband and I have visited Grayfield three times. Our last visit we were accompanied by our friends who had never been. Each stay was three or four days which is over $1000 a day. No doubt the property is beautiful, restful and unlike other properties we visited. Having said that a situation arose that has truly placed a damper on future trips there. We were told it was all inclusive but the final charge included a “ tip” for Grayfield employees. We always tipped them generously after each excursion but we were ok with the extra ( which was several hundred dollars). The dividing line with us was a charge for extra luggage. I believe it was $75 each way for us and again for our friends. You are instructed in advance that dinner dress is refined. No shorts, sneakers, hiking attire etc. in order to adhere to this extra clothing, shoes, for women hair products etc are necessary to bring. Otherwise I could have simply packed an overnight bag. Several nights there were guests who came to dinner dressed in hiking clothing and we were there dressed as requested and later penalized for following request. My suggestion, drop the dining requirements! Grayfield is no doubt a special place and we loved out visits there but resented the feelings of being penalized for following their directives.

This place is an amazing hotel to totally unplug. It is simple, yet elegant. The staff were amazing and the food was so good. There is no wifi, so it was nice to be forced to unplug for a few days. I loved the history of the island and the Hotel. If you are looking for a place to be pampered, this isn’t it. But if you want laid back and adventurous, with simple yet fantastic food, Greyfield is for you! The perfect place to unwind!
