Nestled into downtown Amsterdam, the Pulitzer Amsterdam, part of the Legend collection of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, provides a hidden neighborhood of 25 connected canal houses and gardens. A historic venue dating back to the Golden Age, this luxury hotel once hosted Dutch aristocrats and provided the backdrop to striking business deals. All rooms and suites offer a residential feel with comfy beds, marble bathrooms, and work desks.

Shocking hotel. It was filthy. I stayed for 4 nights and the carpet outside of my door was not vacuumed once: the staff were rude: breakfast felt like a Holiday Inn: would not recommend. The bedrooms were carpeted and filthy

The design attention to detail is fresh and inspiring and done with a great choices. Lots to look at in every restaurant and especially the amazingly well appointed BUT the big broken link at the Pulitzer is a lack of the quality and courteous service expected from a 5 star property In the entry terrace area outdoor patio eatery the servers were consistently surly and inattentive, contentious and aggressive — was dismayed and disappointed by this The front reception and concierge and bell hop were all bright spots. But every restaurant visit at Pulitzer was disappointing from a service point of view, notably absent are grace and welcoming hospitality. One young male waiter a Monday May 25th late afternoon was especially rude and unwelcoming, and surely. Clearly didn’t embody a service ethic worthy of a 5 star experience - unfortunately so, the following day at the patio on Tuesday May 26 a middle aged woman with wavy pulled back hair was equally challenged. And lacking in service ethic and pleasant hospitality. I overheard another non-related guest prompt her saying, “what’s going on here? I’m paying a lot of money to stay here and just want to have a nice lunch. Can we press reset ?” Instead of apologizing, the workers argued and debated the customers in both situations Pulitzer hospitality workers in the restaurants and bars need a big upgrade in courtesy, engagement and hospitality The lacking service was a big and unexpected and consistent experience — it needs significant attention from senior management; big growth opportunity.

Having stayed at this Hotel for 13 nights a year ago and for a week a few days ago, there is no question that this a unique and special hotel. Canal Houses beautifully and stylishly "turned" into a hotel is already quite something. Add to that a beautiful garden area with a restaurant (apply called Garden) to dine in or overlook. The restaurant Jansz is also excellent. But what really tops everything is the wonderful, delightful, warm, friendly and ever-helpful staff - in all "areas" of the hotel. To stay here is a real, real treat!

There were many great things about the hotel, including the location. Public spaces were beautiful. The staff was abundant but not necessarily effective. This was the sole hotel on a 10 day trip with my 82 year old mother in which we weren’t immediately offered a (slightly) early check in. A mixup with the room type was rectified, but I had to complain. They moved us and offered breakfast. Accommodations were not as luxurious as I would hope for 5 stars and the price. Jansz restaurant staff were lovely.

We have one more full day at The Pulitzer, check out on the day after tomorrow. The whole staff has been great. Canal cruise with Jan, a local and a funny guy, funny enough to be invited to do warm-up for Wanda Sykes. Staying in the Wool House and if we get to have the same room, the next time we come back, I’m sure we would like it the second time as much as we’ve liked it the first time. If you don’t like style and sophistication, this might not be the hotel for you. Comfortable bed, great bathroom, good lighting, quite enough for this New York City couple. The location was great for everything we like and wanted,… restaurants, shopping, spring time with leaves coming out on the trees and flowers planting all around. In a way, I almost don’t want to pump this place because I don’t want it to get more popular and more expensive and harder to get in when we come back again. Bedankje Pulitzer.
