Beautiful property but poor service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

A lovely castle with plenty of history, but in need of some updating. We had a very nice quiet room but the shower pressure was poor and it would be nice to have a door on the loo! Service was ramshackle, no proper bar or waiting staff, no-one seemed to know wha they were doing. We gave up on a bottle of wine at dinner as most seemed unavailable and we had finished our starter before we were offered anything else. Food was pedestrian. A potentially delightful stay let down by poor staffing

Terrible

Absolutely do not book this place if you want a guaranteed booking. Having booked three months ago for a bank holiday weekend this coming summer I just received a call to say they were cancelling my booking due to a booking error. Absolute jokers. Of course now there are now suitable family rooms available at this short notice for bank holiday weekend at comparable places.

Wonderful weekend away

Our stay here was wonderful! Beautiful grounds and buildings. We went for a Junior Deluxe room, I requested the Winchelsea and I received a call a couple of days before our arrival checking if we wanted a dinner reservation in the restaurant and confirming this room was reserved for us. It was a lovely room, very clean and warm and toasty. A huge bathroom with a walk in shower and a lovely bath, robes and slippers and fantastic underfloor heating and lovely toiletries. The bed was big and super comfy and the lovely homemade biscuits and Nespresso machine just topped it all off. There was a small amount of noise from the room upstairs when they walked around but nothing excessive and I think expected given the age of the buildings. Otherwise it was very quiet. Yes, there is no milk in the rooms but actually it's nice not to have the hum of a refrigerator in the room or those little plastic long life milks. We could have requested the milk be brought to our room but as we were very close to reception, it was no trouble to pop down to get some milk. We had dinner in the restaurant on the first night which was delicious. The second night we popped down to The Bridge Inn for a change of scene, also recommend! The breakfast was also delicious and plentiful. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. I have to admit, I normally always check Trip Advisor reviews before booking anywhere but in this case I didn't! When I did look at some of the reviews later, I was slightly concerned I had made a mistake but as I discovered, I had absolutely nothing to worry about. Thanks for a lovely stay!

A birthday treat

We booked the gourmet package and the food on the first night - their 5 course dinner, was good - see pics.. Very accommodating for an intolerance. The lounge meal the next evening was also good, although the portions were rather large for us. I gave a 4 as the hotel just missed on little things. They state they are luxury but there are too many niggles to say this. I have written to the hotel directly regarding these - welcome on arrival, dining room not being open, service, bathroom cleanliness and a few other things

Massive disappointment. Unsafe, unclean, dark and dingy.

We chose to celebrate our wedding day here and booked afternoon tea for 9 members of our family and also a room for myself and husband to stay in for two nights. We wish we had not. Whilst the staff are friendly they are clearly trying to make up for what is missing everywhere else. Afternoon tea: We booked afternoon tea for 9 guests (around £500 when you include service charge), we detailed allergies multiple times through email and verbally. Despite this one of the afternoon teas came with the ingredient we specifically asked to not have (butter, which was obviously used to fry a piece of bread) which ruined my mother in law's afternoon tea experience as she couldn't then eat anything and was starving. They did offer to remake it but she could not trust the chef at that point so said no, given we had been very clear multiple times through email, and again verbally before the afternoon teas were brought out. We were seated in a lounge not the restaurant and felt like an after thought, we had not been told we would be in a small room out of the way with small tables and barely enough space for us to sit. We waited ages for drinks and top ups, and had to repeatedly ask for milk. The tea pots were delivered the wrong way round too, so we all ended up with each others tea. The wine list was limited and my brother had to discreetly complain about the wine he did receive. There was a fireplace with wood in it but no offer of lighting it. The actual food was not Michelin standard by any means. It was just ok. Some nicer items then others. Our room: We were in a room called Cambers, when we entered it was cold and dark. There was only one set of toiletries and no bubble bath (but a bath) however we were kindly brought another set of toiletries to make up for the lack of bubble bath for the bath. The bath needed bubbles to hide the thick orange and green mould around the rim of the bath and the shower glass. The bathroom had multiple areas of black mould around it and was dusty. The room was scratched up and needs a thorough repainting. There is no main light in the room only two side lamps which is really not ideal in winter. I suppose the lack of light works to hide the actual state of the room (carpets and all). There were supposed to be homemade biscuits but instead there was a sorry looking bowl of fruit which had one apple, one orange, and a handful of grapes that were obviously not fresh. The bed and pillows were comfortable. Restaurant: the staff, again are lovely, but the food was not exceptional, some parts of the breakfast was cold, and I was given a chipped glass. None of the above is what you expect from a 4 start hotel, especially not a Relais & Châteaux. We think given that the afternoon tea we paid £500 was such a let down, and unsafe (allergy contamination) they would try to do better with our room, but instead we were in a dank, cold and mouldy room. The windows were nice and ornate on the outside and if there was not so much condensation the view would have been nice too. We spent over £1200 for those two days and it's probably the worst £1200 we've ever spent. The waiting staff and receptionist seemed nice and like they were trying so I feel bad writing this but I have to be honest about the experience and it was a complete let down. I tried to find a contact details to complain to but it was impossible.
