With a flawless design and a spectacular setting, Alila Villas Uluwatu marries Balinese culture with modern design. Perched atop a magnificent plateau abutting limestone cliffs, the ocean below bellows with the sound of crashing waves and creates a melodic echo with every crest. There are 84 sustainably-designed villas concealing interiors that are contemporary and uncluttered, with overtones of traditional Balinese textures including rattan and stone. The multi-room villas, each with its own pool, radiate with luxury and boast such appointments as private bars, outdoor dining nooks, private cabanas, and stylish baths with both indoor and outdoor showers. There is also 24-hour butler service, which adds an effortless element to your stay.

The villa itself is absolutely beautiful and the staff were amazing throughout our stay. The hotel also has incredible views of the Indian Ocean. We specifically chose Alila for a staycation because we wanted somewhere peaceful where we could relax, enjoy the villa, and not really have to leave the property. For that purpose, it would have been perfect. That said, I would strongly reconsider staying here over a weekend, especially if there is a wedding or event happening at the hotel. Unfortunately, there was a wedding during our stay, and the loud music, screaming, and overall noise completely ruined the tranquil atmosphere we came here for. Even from inside our villa, the noise was very noticeable late into the night (past 10pm). For a resort at this price point, I really expected the guest experience and peaceful atmosphere to be better protected, especially when private events are taking place. (I also talked to a staff member and they mentioned that this seems to be a recurring concern shared among other guests. They host a lot of weddings and therefore this hotel tends to be noisy during weekends. I would avoid booking Alila during weekends completely just to be safe!) Another thing to keep in mind is that there really isn’t much nearby, and the hotel itself is relatively small. If you’re coming to Bali to explore, go to restaurants, or have lots of things to do, this probably isn’t the most convenient location. But if your goal is simply to stay in a beautiful villa, relax, and enjoy the ocean views, it’s a wonderful setting. Unfortunately, the wedding noise was a big enough issue that it really affected my overall impression of the stay. The property, villas, views, and staff are all lovely, but for the price we paid, I was hoping for a much more peaceful and relaxing experience.

This resort has serious drainage and plumbing issues. For a luxury resort charging around $800 per night, the condition of the facilities was extremely disappointing. I stayed in Villa 220. On one occasion, the shower in my villa did not drain properly, causing water to overflow into the bedroom while I was showering. On another occasion, the shower in the spa facility also failed to drain, and we had to use towels to prevent the water from flooding the changing room floor. The water pressure for the bathtub in the villa was also extremely low. It would have taken more than an hour to fill the tub, and I eventually gave up on taking a bath in the bathtub because it was taking far too long. The staff were friendly, but the resort’s basic plumbing and water facilities are not remotely up to the standard expected of a high-end luxury property. There are many resorts in the Uluwatu area offering views of this caliber. I recommend choosing a different resort. I regret choosing this resort.

“The Alila Uluwatu is a truly gorgeous property with breathtaking views. It was the perfect end to our honeymoon. I strongly recommend the hotel for a private getaway for couples although there were some families present at the time we were there. Definitely a very pricey hotel. The saying ""if you have to ask then you probably can't afford it"" I think fits well. However with views and luxury behind them I figure one shouldn't complain. Really miss waking up to seeing my private pool, cabana and the blue skies and seas of the Indian ocean sprawled out before me. Service couldn't be flawed either. Smiles everywhere accompanied by genuine interest to make sure all was well with meals, spa, rooms etc."
