Crossing from Vilanculos by helicopter and flying over the Indian Ocean added to the thrill of seeing Benguerra island for the first time. As we flew over Azura on approach we could already feel the exclusivity of this island retreat . On arrival at the helipad we were welcomed by hotel staff who greeted us with song and dance, we knew this was going to be a special stay. Olivia a senior manager was waiting for us at the entrance to the reception and instantly endeared herself to us with her witty Irish humour, a true character that as the days progressed really added to our overall experience…. Always visible, highly personalised level of service together with a wealth of knowledge of the Inhumbane region led us to a four night (far too short) blissful stay on this wonderful, idyllic island. Decor of the main lodge area is beautifully inviting, plenty of scrumptious couches and areas to sit for a cocktail, read, or simply watch life go by as people from the local community walk the beach as they have always done, either to fish, to church or school , colourful and joyful with warm waves and smiles . Our private Infinity pool suite with gorgeous garden, trees and bird life was calm and beautiful proportioned, plenty of space, loved the outdoor shower (and Rain products )….. the comfort and sleep quality was exceptional with little gifts appearing on the bed as we retired. Ronaldo our host (ie butler) was at hand day and night. Assisting with breakfast, lunch, bringing complimentary cocktails at 4.30pm and hosting again at dinner, nothing was too much trouble. We walked the stunning sandy beach daily and swam in clear calm warm sea, a true holiday in the sense of peace, nature and relaxation, We loved: snorkelling trip with Sofida on Two Mile Reef a protected marine park (stunning, pristine environment full of marine life in crystal water). Hubby took a four hour fishing trip and returned with two beautiful King Mackerel …….and a giant smile ! Food was great, with flexible dining options. On our last night Ronaldo set up a beautifully decorated dining table with lanterns, and palm leaves on the beach outside our suite and we dined under the stars . The owners of Azura clearly support and work with the local community, create jobs, fund schooling and are conscious of carbon footprint and sustainability which we applaud. We visited Benguerra during May and the temperatures suited us perfectly with little humidity and glorious 25- 27 deg daily, Would we return, absolutely ….. as Olivia might recall we had to be virtually man- handled out of the chair for our checkout ðŸ¤

Our stay at Azura was literally a 'money can't buy' experience. We were fortunate enough to stay in the Presidential Villa - wow, wow, wow. Words cannot describe the level of service, the 'always-on but never intrusive' attention to every need, Antonio's remarkable food and the exceptional beauty (and size!) of the villa, the gorgeous beachfront pool, the beach and honestly the entire location. What an incredible experience we had that I cannot recommend more highly.

We enjoyed tailored to our needs - world class cuisine, watersports and our own hosts with whom.they made our stay extra special. My fiancee and I have just returned from an unforgettable engagement trip to Azura Benguerra, and are already wishing we were back in paradise! Her words to me as we paddles the kayak over the azure waters, overlooking the small archipelago from a small distance away - palm trees and white beaches - were 'this holiday feels like a dream'. It was a feeling that we both shared, and fell in love with the location, the people, and everything else that went with it. The resort and location are stunning, but I have to begin this review with the people. From the warm welcomes from Shannon and Olivia, to the friendly, attentive and efficient service from our host, Hala, to the rapid refills of our delicious cocktails from Elton and the bar staff, it was just a pleasure to see so many genuinely smiling faces. Everyone knew our names, made a point to congratulate us on the engagement, and made us feel extra special. We loved the villa too - a royal villa towards the northern end of the beach that allowed us to get a good few steps in as we walked to and from the main areas. The views over the beach and ocean were spectacular, and sitting in the Sala to watch the sunset each night (with a daily cocktail brought to the villa) was just a magical time of day. The beds were huge and comfortable, and the aircon ensured we slept well. Large bath tubs and both indoor and outdoor showers were supplied with good water pressure and piping hot water - always impressive for an off-grid camp! The swimming pool and multiple outdoor seated areas ensured we got to enjoy plenty of outdoor time in comfort, and could cool off easily in the refreshing infinity pool. The dining was always delicious and full of flavours, and even as a non-fish eater, there were always good options for me - but the fish was so fresh and tasty, that I ended up eating that too! The breakfast pao is well worth trying! Breads were freshly made, and it was always a treat to see what the chefs would produce. A day at the peri peri beach club was wonderful - a nice setting, and change of scenery, but what we enjoyed most was the opportunity to meet the other guests and get to know them, and while the Benguerra resort is more private than Marlin, we soon learnt that it was still quite a social vibe around the bar in the evenings, and got to know most the guests that came and went during our stay - kind of like the end of a day on safari, it was good to exchange stories of what the day held whilst sipping a cocktail at the end of it. Activity wise, there was a lot on offer for water enthusiasts, from deep sea fishing to scuba excursions. We enjoyed the island hop, and aside from enjoyable snorkelling, marvelled at their lunch time set up on a sandy beach in the middle of nowhere! A few reviews mention the tidal nature of the island, and it is extreme, but we did not see it in a negative light - the beauty of the waters rising and falling made it even more special...and the water itself was perfect - clean, calm, azure and oh-so-warm! All in all, it was a wonderful experience, and created memories for a lifetime. It is one thing to have a great location, but the trip would not have been the same if it weren't for the staff...so thank you to Amos, Olivia, Shannon, Hala, Elton, Teles and all the other members that took care of us - it is greatly appreciated! Hope to be back one day!
