A Dartmoor Gem

We stayed for five nights in a lovely valley view suite . The room was spacious , clean and amazing views . Espresso coffee machine , daily bottled water and fruit and biscuits. Staff were attentive and polite , mention to Danielle on reception (super helpful ) and Scott in restaurant ( great humour ) . Main restaurant superb , brasserie a little less professional. Our daughter used the spa and was absolutely delighted with her treatment. Thank you to all at Bovey Castle . Tip Don’t miss the morning birds of prey display .

A grand day out !

A group of us meet monthly for Sunday Lunch . Bovey Castle proved an excellent choice. It’s in the most beautiful surroundings. You feel a little privileged to be there somehow . The team are excellent and super friendly with a hello from everyone including the pianist on the Grand as you head to the dining room. Obviously a multi tasker can read music and say hi - thank you ! A round table a definite bonus for a larger group everyone is in the conversation. Their Sunday menu is great and offers I believe excellent value for money. Wine list extensive with some affordable corkers on there. All in all a great Sunday lunch option and on that basis I am sure excellent for other occasions. The only minus may seem trivial - no handbag hooks in the ladies lavatories - who wants to put their Hermes Birkin Bag on the floor- I wish !!

Style of substance

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

I recently stayed at Bovey Castle and, unfortunately, the experience fell far below expectations—especially given the reputation and price point. From the outset, the service felt disorganised and inattentive. Basic standards you would expect from a hotel of this calibre simply weren’t met. The overall experience felt more like style over substance. While the setting is undeniably beautiful, it doesn’t make up for the lack of attention to detail and inconsistent service throughout the stay. What was most disappointing was the feeling that guest experience wasn’t a priority. For a luxury venue, you expect a seamless and welcoming experience—this was quite the opposite. I wouldn’t return based on this visit.

A memorable birthday stay in Dartmoor

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We stayed at Bovey Castle for my birthday and had a wonderful experience. We were kindly upgraded to a State Room on the first-floor corner of the castle with beautiful views of the grounds. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the bathroom was a highlight, with a clawfoot bathtub and plenty of space. Service stood out throughout our stay. Check-in was smooth and welcoming, and I was surprised with champagne and chocolates for my birthday, which was a thoughtful touch. Special thanks to Vic in the restaurant, the blonde curly-haired receptionist, and a manager with long braids who was very attentive and personable. We also enjoyed the small experiences around the estate, especially the chicken and ferret session where we got to hold Harry the ferret. The pool and spa facilities were clean, well maintained, and relaxing. Even with rainy weather, the castle atmosphere made the stay feel cosy and special. It is difficult to choose one highlight as the whole experience felt well put together. We would happily return and are already considering another visit next year.

A lovely place but not worth the money

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We arrived for an overnight stay in thick fog . We found the hotel difficult to find in those conditions and did not think it was well signposted so be clear of the route before setting off . We arrived early to use the facilities ( we had checked before hand we were able to do this) only to find that the spa was not working due to chlorine issues . This was extremely disappointing and gave us a lot of time on our hands . We did go for a walk but in the fog there was nothing to see . Our room (40) was lovely , very big and comfortable. Dinner was included in our overnight stay with £50 per person given as an allowance . We did think it was wrong though that a service charge was added to this allowance given that it was part of our overnight cost . The food was delicious although we felt the drinks were overpriced . £16 for a large glass of wine . We woke early the next day in the hope that we could use the pool before breakfast only to find it was still out of action . Again disappointed . Breakfast was ok but nothing different than any good hotel . Staff service everywhere was excellent . However for £360 for an overnight stay 3 course meal , breakfast and 3 glasses of wine we thought it was a bit overpriced and that was at a special offer price for the overnight stay .
