30+ Trips to the Maldives — This Is One That Truly Surprised Us

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

We’ve stayed at over 30 resorts across the Maldives — from Four Seasons to Nautilus, Joali, Velaa and Cheval Blanc — and this is one of the very few that genuinely surprised us. Quick Take - Best for: natural, pristine beach, house reef, quiet luxury - Avoid if: you’re looking for a more dressed-up, social atmosphere - Must book: Beach Retreat Villas (40, 36, 38, 39) Six Senses Kanuhura has lived several lives — from its early days as Kanuhura to its reinvention in 2023 as “a Maldivian island icon, reborn.” Set in the pristine Lhaviyani Atoll, about a 40-minute seaplane ride from Malé, it retains something increasingly rare: space, natural beauty, and a sense of authenticity that has largely disappeared elsewhere. Unlike meticulously curated resorts such as Cheval Blanc— exceptional in its own right — where every detail is orchestrated, Kanuhura follows a quieter philosophy. The long-standing barefoot ethos, present since the island’s original opening, remains intact and sets the tone from the moment one arrives. The Island — A Rare Return to Natural Maldives Kanuhura is, above all, a beach island — and an exceptional one. Erosion is minimal, there are no sandbags or stone barriers, and the shoreline can be walked in its entirety — a rarity today in Maldives. What truly sets it apart, however, is its approach to sustainability. Under Six Senses, over 3,000 kilograms of legacy plastic sheeting — once used to suppress seagrass — have been removed, allowing natural ecosystems to regenerate. The result is not the engineered turquoise seen elsewhere, but something far more compelling: a lagoon that feels alive. A special mention should go to James, the island’s Oxford-trained marine biologist, whose friendliness, knowledge and genuine commitment to marine conservation are as impressive as they are infectious. His passion for the subject — and for sharing it — adds a meaningful dimension to the experience. Accommodation — Why Room Choice Really Matters Kanuhura is effectively two resorts in one. On one side: newly built Six Senses villas around The Point — contemporary and refined. On the other: original Maldivian-style villas — well maintained and upgraded throughout the years, but from another era and a different interpretation of luxury. The contrast is not subtle — in design, experience, and price — and ultimately shapes both the stay and its clientele. Traveler tip: download the resort map in advance. At roughly double the price — but fully justified — the standout villas are the (Family) Beach Retreat Villas with Pool, particularly rooms 40, 36, 38 and 39. Their open views toward Drift Island and the reef offer a level of openness, seclusion and natural beauty unmatched elsewhere on the island. Positioned directly opposite the house reef (the “Coral Garden”)— one of the finest we’ve experienced — they allow daily, effortless swims with turtles, manta rays, baby sharks and vibrant reef fish just steps from your villa. Traveler tip: collect snorkeling gear on arrival — you’ll use it constantly. One caveat: currents can sometimes days be strong at high tide; children should be supervised. The largely south facing lagoon-side villas — both Beach Retreat and standard — offer calmer, shallow waters better suited to younger children, though the water is less clear and the beach in some sections unusually wide, limiting airflow and making the area noticeably warmer. Villas 91–55 (especially 79–80) on the east side are best avoided — narrower beach, compromised views, and proximity to water villas. Better to use the main beach or head to The Point for a more rewarding swim. For those not wishing to splurge on the newly built Beach Retreat accommodation, Villas 56–51 offer good value with open views, and the added benefit of afternoon shade — ideal for families.   For overwater villas, other resorts remain stronger. Dining — Generous, Varied, and Relaxed Dining is consistently excellent. Sip & Sand (Japanese), Bottega (Italian), and The Point (Spanish/Mexican) form the core offering, complemented by Drift — a relaxed lunch venue on its own island. Half-board is highly recommended: generous portions (3 starters, 1 main, 1 dessert per person, including children) and access to excellent themed evenings. Breakfast at Marketplace is extensive, though the 10:30 a.m. closing can be challenging with jet lag. A highlight of a different kind is Scoops — unlimited homemade ice cream — located, somewhat amusingly, next to the gym, complete with a window between the two. Facilities & Activities — Depth of Experience The range of activities is extensive. We stayed nearly two weeks — and it still felt short. Each morning, your butler (GEM) shares a full program: from snorkeling trips, sunset cruises, marine talks, yoga, meditation, turtle encounters, to cinema under the stars. Diving and snorkeling are exceptional, supported by a rich house reef. Sports include tennis, squash (including indoor courts), and a reasonably equipped — if slightly tired — gym. The spa is also great: treatments are excellent, and the space — with steam, sauna and plunge pool — is beautifully designed, calm, and more expansive than it appears. The kids club, however, feels modest and lacks energy, with a limited range of engaging activities. Service — Genuine and Attentive, with Scope for Greater Consistency Service is warm and well intentioned, but not always at the level expected at this price point. Housekeeping could be more consistent. In-villa dining trays sometimes required reminders to be cleared, and at times cleaning felt lighter than expected. These are not structural issues, but they become noticeable over longer stays. Given the quality of the island itself, the potential to reach the very highest level is clearly there. Conclusion — For Those Who Know What They’re Looking For Those seeking perfectly styled environment, curated social scenes, and a place to see and be seen may find Six Senses Kanuhura intentionally restrained. But for those looking for something increasingly rare in the Maldives — a natural beach free from erosion barriers, a living reef, and a genuine sense of openness — it delivers with quiet confidence. With the right villa choice — and some minor fine-tuning in execution — the experience becomes truly exceptional.

Luxury as a minimum

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

From the moment we stepped into the airport arrivals at Male to the time of our departure every detail was taken care of. On arrival on the resort island of Kanuhura the welcome was warm and friendly. The team led by Alicia Graham, are exceptional individuals, trained to provide a seamless and highly individual experience for their guests, without it feeling intrusive. Our GEM (Guest Experience Maker), Mua has the most remarkable ability to anticipate your every need, and he certainly ensured our stay exceeded expectations. A true paradise, luxury as a minimum, memorable moments throughout, and something I plan to repeat annually!

A truly beautiful place, made even more special by the wonderful people who work here. We had an amazing time, recharged, and enjoyed every moment on this island. A special thank you to Shifu Ali, who took such wonderful care of us every day. Your kindness, attention, and warm smile truly made our stay feel like home. A very special thank you to Nemo from the Kids Club. You made our child’s days here so joyful and full of discovery. The connection you built and the fun, meaningful moments you shared will stay with us for a long time 🫶 We left with wonderful memories and hope to be back soon.

The best holiday in Paradise.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

This resort can only be described as Paradise. The staff, men and women must be hand picked because each and every one of them is kind, happy and serviceable. Nothing is too much trouble and they give the sane courtesy to children. There is a Kids’ Club and plenty of babysitting/nanny services which are superb. The facilities are excellent with wellbeing in mind. The food is excellent, fresh and offers a good variety and choice. The accommodation (we had a beach villa) is extremely comfortable and wants for nothing including a copious supply of water. There are various trips available including g snorkelling and dolphin sightings. I came here with my adult family and two very young grandchildren and would consider this the best holiday I have ever experienced. Thank you to all at Six Senses.
