Reviews for The Martha Washington Inn and Spa

Not what it used to be!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

We came back to the Martha to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. Our original reservation was for a spa package which 3 weeks before our arrival was cancelled because of the Coronavirus restrictions on spa services not being lifted. Not their fault and we understood. So we decided to go anyway. When we made our original reservation we made sure to tell them it was our anniversary and a really did oak occasion for us. I thought this would prompt a particularly nice room and maybe a special greeting. We arrived at 1 and were curtly told check in us at 3. No offer to take our bags or let us park until checkin. I had to request permission to park and the person who greeted us was less than friendly! The room we got, after wandering all over the place to find it, was dark and dreary with dull peeling wallpaper and old worn out carpet. The bathroom counter area was tiny and any amenities you normally find in hotels, hair dryer, iron, etc; you had to call and ask for. No tub, but the shower was nice. The bed was comfy. But the decor really needs sprucing up. You would think if you had to be shut down for a period of time during the pandemic you could at least replace old worn out artificial flowers with something nice! Then on the night we had made reservations for dinner I decided to confirm the time, just to make sure we did not arrive late, and they did not have our reservations in the schedule! Lucky I asked! We will likely find somewhere else to stay next trip!

Lovely stay in Abingdon, VA

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We stayed for two nights on a friend's recommendation and loved every minute of it. The location, amenities, price, staff, and overall atmosphere were outstanding. The hotel is conveniently located across from the Barter Theatre, making it easy to catch a show before settling in. Check-in was seamless, and while our room was small, it was charming and full of character. The hotel's age comes with a few quirks, but that's part of its appeal. We enjoyed relaxing on the porch, watching the "activity" on Main Street, and even taking advantage of the trampoline and mini golf. In the evenings, the multi-level outdoor hot tub was wonderful, but the highlight for us was the library—a cozy space filled with books, games, memorabilia, comfortable seating, and a fireplace. The hotel's history as a women's college is reflected throughout the hallways with photos and artifacts, which I found especially interesting after spending 20 years working at one myself. The staff were friendly, the restaurant was reasonably priced, and both dinner and the included breakfast were delicious. We did not go to the spa because we just aren't interested in that kind of thing. Ten out of ten, would do it again.

Lack of effort from senior management and leadership

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

The MW is a beautiful property in a prime location, but our experience was marred by a significant billing mistake. My wife and I stayed with a group, and our cards were mistakenly charged over $1,200 for someone else’s room. While errors happen, the recovery was abysmal. It took almost two weeks, eight messages, and numerous phone calls to reach a resolution. Despite my repeated attempts to contact management and accounting, neither department ever returned a call. Even after a front desk staff member was able to resolve the mistaken charge, I never received any explanation or even a simple apology from management. The property is lovely, but the lack of leadership and accountability from management is unacceptable.

Not great Martha!

My wife and I really looked forward to getting away for a nice weekend and chose the Martha. At first the staff seemed to really work to help get us a room after being over booked. They got us into a suite and we were excited. This is where the trouble began. After checking in and going to our room we soon learned that the AC was not working in one half of the suite. We called and were assured that it could be quickly fixed. Two young men came down and tried a couple of things and left telling us that there was nothing they could do. They told us that someone would get to it first thing in the morning. We waited until 10 and finally inquired at the front desk about it. The young man at the desk knew nothing about it. He said he would contact management and let us know something right away. We had to once again inquire about it later in the afternoon with no answer from the front desk. Finally I got a call from the manager at 5:30 pm Saturday night. We were told that there was nothing that they could do so they discounted our room 50 bucks and told us they had already done us a favor. We had intended to stay another night but got up and left early Sunday. We left so quickly I left a pair of pants and polo shirt in the closet. I called when we returned home only to have them ghost me and make me call back three straight days and learn that the items were not found even though I am certain I left them in the closet. The Martha rooms were old, run down and dirty (check under the bathroom sink in 110) The sisters restaurant had good food but was under staffed and frantic. We waited 52 minutes from ordering to receiving our food. Seem to be living in the past. Sorry but it was a disappointing weekend.
