We are an iconic designer 5 STAR boutique hotel in the Adelaide Hills famous for our luxury escapes, three hat fine dining restaurant, indulgent day spa experiences, conference retreats and breathtakingly beautiful weddings. Mount Lofty House was built in 1852 by prominent statesman Arthur Hardy as his summer house. Arthur Hardy is reminiscent of a South Australian Jay Gatsby; indeed his wife Martha described their lifestyle as ‘a kind of feudal splendour’. Their beautiful manor soon became the state’s premier address for lavish and infamous parties for Adelaide’s elite of the day. From such lofty beginnings the manor was passed through a number of South Australian families, including a period as commune in the 1970s. In the disastrous 1983 fires of Ash Wednesday Mount Lofty House was burnt to the ground before rising from the ashes like a phoenix to truly become one of South Australia’s great icons.

Day One: First Impressions Adelaide surprised us in the best possible way. Our first stop was the Adelaide Central Market — a vibrant, bustling public market that immediately set the tone for the city. We had a fantastic lunch seated at the bar of Si Seau, consistently rated among the top seafood restaurants in the city. The freshness of the seafood and the energy of the market made for an unforgettable first impression. Day Two: Into the Valley The following morning, Peter, our guide, picked us up and took us into a beautiful valley region filled with waterfalls and lakes. Here, we spotted our first ten wild kangaroos. Even under partially cloudy skies, the landscape was stunning. Here is something important to know about Australia in May and June: the weather is wonderfully unpredictable. You could wake up to fog and rain, and by ten in the morning the skies would be blue and clear. By evening, the light turns dramatic and moody. Pack layers, bring a rain jacket, and embrace it — that ever-shifting atmosphere only added to the beauty of the landscapes we photographed. For lunch, we stopped at a wonderful restaurant called Solopiann. It was charming and intimate, with its own kitchen garden and sweeping views over beautiful wineries and vineyards that had turned from green to gold in the autumn. It was magnificent. After touring through the Adelaide countryside and taking in many different sights and towns, Peter delivered us to Mount Lofty House — our home for the next two nights. This charming property has been beautifully restored, with excellent rooms, outstanding food, and wonderfully friendly staff. Our waitresses and bartender were engaging and warm, and check-in was effortlessly easy. Day Three: Wine Country Peter arrived right on time the next morning for a full day of wine tasting. We began at Bekkers, a superb producer, followed by Deviation Road, where we sampled both their sparkling and still wines — both excellent. After lunch, we traveled on to the picturesque German-heritage town of Hahndorf, a delightful place well worth an afternoon visit. As the day wound down, Peter returned us to Mount Lofty House, completing another wonderful day in the Adelaide Hills. A Word About Our Guide Peter, with Coastal Co., was an exceptional guide — knowledgeable, fun, punctual, and deeply passionate about the region. If you are visiting Adelaide and in need of a great guide, Peter is absolutely your man.
