About the Hotel

We are an iconic designer 5 STAR boutique hotel in the Adelaide Hills famous for our luxury escapes, three hat fine dining restaurant, indulgent day spa experiences, conference retreats and breathtakingly beautiful weddings. Mount Lofty House was built in 1852 by prominent statesman Arthur Hardy as his summer house. Arthur Hardy is reminiscent of a South Australian Jay Gatsby; indeed his wife Martha described their lifestyle as ‘a kind of feudal splendour’. Their beautiful manor soon became the state’s premier address for lavish and infamous parties for Adelaide’s elite of the day. From such lofty beginnings the manor was passed through a number of South Australian families, including a period as commune in the 1970s. In the disastrous 1983 fires of Ash Wednesday Mount Lofty House was burnt to the ground before rising from the ashes like a phoenix to truly become one of South Australia’s great icons.

Any plans we had to leave the property were abandoned. We enjoyed all the facilities at our disposal. Hospitality warmth, great facilities from the room to the grounds to the spa to choices of food venues all meant we felt at home (but more luxurious)! Highly recommended.

Stunning. The entire place was beautiful, with a welcome we’ve never experienced before. This is quite possibly the only hotel room I have ever stayed in that didn’t feel like other people had stayed in before…it was perfect. And it wasn’t new… My only small criticism is that our “garden view” room was actually overlooking the pool and it might not be so great if it was hot and being used. Fortunately it was cold and no-one used it in the 3 days we were there. My other complaint is that I had to leave and go home. Now I will compare every other hotel experience with Mt Lofty, and I will forever be disappointed!

What an amazing stay! We were taken care of from the moment we arrived. Lachlan gave an AMAZING tour and did it with great energy. All the staff are kind and helpful. It’s so calm and relaxing here. We just settled in and enjoyed the amenities. Playing some games, walking the grounds, playing billiards, enjoying a snack or drink at the bar or just quietly reading in a common room. The room was big and the bed was so comfortable. Everything was clean and taken care of.

Mount Lofty guest house was a bucket list item for me and I celebrated my birthday with a 3 night stay. It was to expectation and our room, always smiling staff from start to finish and prompt service and the food and drinks excellent. The dinner in Martha Hardys restaurant was exceptional and the service with a Happy Birthday plate and chocolates a nice surprise. We will return again and hope for better weather but log fires were warm and toasty. Thanks to all! We also had treatments at the Gatekeepers Spa. Alison was wonderful from the greeting right through to the treatment. I think the best facial I have ever experienced.
