We are an iconic designer 5 STAR boutique hotel in the Adelaide Hills famous for our luxury escapes, three hat fine dining restaurant, indulgent day spa experiences, conference retreats and breathtakingly beautiful weddings. Mount Lofty House was built in 1852 by prominent statesman Arthur Hardy as his summer house. Arthur Hardy is reminiscent of a South Australian Jay Gatsby; indeed his wife Martha described their lifestyle as ‘a kind of feudal splendour’. Their beautiful manor soon became the state’s premier address for lavish and infamous parties for Adelaide’s elite of the day. From such lofty beginnings the manor was passed through a number of South Australian families, including a period as commune in the 1970s. In the disastrous 1983 fires of Ash Wednesday Mount Lofty House was burnt to the ground before rising from the ashes like a phoenix to truly become one of South Australia’s great icons.

We have stayed at Mount Lofty House a number of times and we try to do so every year. The highlight of our stay this year was the History Tour conducted by Christopher. We really enjoyed learning about the history of the House while having our delicious mulled wine and the famous Mount Lofty cookies. We also met some really lovely people during the tour and enjoyed their company. Dinner and breakfast were fantastic. We really enjoyed toasting marshmallows on an open fire outside after dinner. We are looking forward to returning for another stay soon.

There was nothing about this accommodation that was negative. The staff were fantastic at looking after us and going above and beyond to ensure our comfort. Bubbles and cookies on arrival, high tea and the amazing view of Adelaide at breakfast were highlights. If you get a chance, book Martha Hardy's and High Tea in advance. Lots of beautiful spots with fireplaces to sit, heaps of books in the library and marshmallow toasting in the fire pit on a clear night. Absolutely beautiful place.

We've had several memorable stays over the years, but Peter's ongoing chemo treatment has seriously curtailed any visits until he said "Enough - it's time we took time out". So in mid-winter we spent two precious days in a Piccadilly Room with views over the valley, Mt Lofty and the Ranges. From the minute we were greeted at our car on arrival, luggage whisked away to our room, a welcoming mulled wine at Reception, we were surrounded with peace and luxury in such a historic setting. Guests can gather at 4.30 pm in front of a real log fire in the Library where Guest Relations Manager Christopher delivers a brilliantly crafted story about the House's beginnings, original owners Arthur and Martha Hardy, the bushfire which razed the house, it's resurrection by a local architect, followed by a tour of the rarely seen parts of the building, especially the wine cellars and the origin of their tunnels. Nothing is too much trouble, the staff are genuinely caring and this shows in a friendly camaraderie which develops among guests. The meals are stunning, the adjacent Botanic Gardens worth exploring, and Christopher's "Adelaide Hills Adventure" brochure offers a map of surrounding Must See producers with special offers available to House guests. Looking forward to a Summer visit.
