We are an iconic designer 5 STAR boutique hotel in the Adelaide Hills famous for our luxury escapes, three hat fine dining restaurant, indulgent day spa experiences, conference retreats and breathtakingly beautiful weddings. Mount Lofty House was built in 1852 by prominent statesman Arthur Hardy as his summer house. Arthur Hardy is reminiscent of a South Australian Jay Gatsby; indeed his wife Martha described their lifestyle as ‘a kind of feudal splendour’. Their beautiful manor soon became the state’s premier address for lavish and infamous parties for Adelaide’s elite of the day. From such lofty beginnings the manor was passed through a number of South Australian families, including a period as commune in the 1970s. In the disastrous 1983 fires of Ash Wednesday Mount Lofty House was burnt to the ground before rising from the ashes like a phoenix to truly become one of South Australia’s great icons.

An absolute treat, from location, to venue, food, service and little touches that make you feel special. It's luxury with authenticity and country charm. You'll leave with sadness and instantly start planning your next stay.

Our stay at Mount Lofty House was nothing short of exceptional. The accommodation, food and drinks were all truly 10/10. We enjoyed both the High Tea and dinner at Martha Hardy's Kitchen, and every detail was beautifully executed — from the quality of the food to the atmosphere and presentation. What really stood out to us, however, was the customer service. Christopher and the entire team made us feel genuinely welcomed and valued from the moment we arrived, and it was clear throughout our stay that they went above and beyond to create a personal and memorable experience for us. That level of hospitality is rare and deserves to be recognised. A particular highlight for us was the house tour, which added such a unique and personal touch to the experience. Learning more about the history and character of the property made our stay feel even more special and immersive. Our only regret was staying for just one night. We will absolutely be returning and recommending Mount Lofty House to friends, family and colleagues looking for a truly outstanding experience. We travel frequently and use AMEX Concierge Travel for many of our luxury experiences, and we will absolutely be sending them a personal note to highlight Mount Lofty House as a true standout experience. Thank you again to Christopher and the entire team for such a wonderful and memorable stay.

A beautifully appointed hotel with warm and generous hospitality. A hidden gem tucked up in the hills with everything you could hope for to take a step away from a busy life and rest. With everything you could think of on sight from phenomenal meals in several restaurants to a high tea that is second to none, spa treatments and Master Wine Classes. Why would you leave? Should it strike you to branch out the Beverly Hills of SA is just down the road, where you can shop and eat till your heart is content. Head back up the hill and be treated and listed to by the wonderfully warm and engaging team. A must do in Adelaide atleast one in your life.

Thank you Mount Lofty House for a Bucket List experience. A beautiful setting, breathtaking scenery and service of the highest order. From the moment we arrived , being welcomed by Christopher we were made to feel very special. We absolutely loved the History Tour with a glass of bubbly. Will did a wonderful job explaining the amazing history of Lofty House. What can I say about the 10 Course Degustation Meal ? Delicious food, amazing service and a breathtaking view down the Adelaide Hills. The rooms are luxurious and spacious and I could go on forever. Thank you again for a memorable experience. We hope to come back soon.

Firstly, I would like to state that I contacted the venue regarding my awful experience and they never saw fit to reply. This is why I feel a public review a good idea for those looking to avoid such upsets. Whilst it may be satisfactory for some, people in similar circumstances to me would be advised to look elsewhere. My husband and I booked an overnight stay to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We prepaid for the degustation and breakfast. We were greeted by a friendly and professional young man, who made us feel most welcome. The champagne was a nice touch, whilst our bags were taken to our suite. The Tower suite was nice. I liked the selection of books. The chairs weren’t particularly comfortable, so I found myself sitting upstairs on the bed. The view was poor due to the dreadful weather. This, of course, is no fault of the venue, yet it is worth mentioning to non locals, that fog is very common in that area. Jurlique products in the bathroom were lovely and I liked that they supported a local business. The meal is where things went so terribly wrong. My husband had been asked what we don’t eat. He told them I don’t eat seafood or chicken. To be honest, there are a lot of things I don’t eat, but really, I thought that would cover it. Be warned, if you don’t eat kangaroo or insects then let them know… yep, you did read that correctly. One dish was served with green ants! Many of the courses were seafood, so my dishes were all substituted. No effort was made to make the dishes edible for me. I was subjected to thick pieces of raw meat for two courses, on cold sauces, with clashing flavours, disgusting textures, and not even a knife to attempt to cut the meat. I was violently sick by course three. Quail was also served instead of fish. As they knew I didn’t eat chicken, I really didn’t think it would have been offered. One course was a roasted carrot on a carrot puree. It was at this point I actually thought the chef was taking the piss! It was clear s/he was unhappy about a compromise on the menu. I could talk about other courses and the snooty maître d, but to be honest, I get upset just thinking about it. To top it all, they tried to charge us for a meal we had already paid for. This is not the first time we have had this issue at Mt Lofty House. It was hands down, the most revolting food I’ve ever tried; I scarcely touched any of it. My anniversary weekend was completely ruined. I just couldn’t wait to get home. In hindsight, I wish I had walked out. I didn’t sleep at all anyhow. So many of my friends exhibited no surprise when I told them of my experience. They said they would have advised me against my choice, had they known. It is very sad that we all had such poor experiences, when I love to support local. Next time though, I’ll go further afield. Please save yourself the stress and don’t waste your money!
