Beautiful country chateau let down by food

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We stopped off here en route to the Dordogne. The hotel itself is beautiful, just like being a house guest in a gorgeous chateau. The pool area is exceptional, with hot tub, lovely pool, sun loungers, sauna and honesty bar. Lovely grounds and terraces. Room was comfortable and quirky, authentic chateau style. Loved the relaxed feel, honesty bar etc. What let it down was the dinner, which we had high hopes for and were expecting a gourmet treat. Instead it was barely edible, a starter of beetroot “gazpacho”, which managed to be both lumpy and watery, woefully under seasoned and frankly odd. No-one on my table finished it. The main course was a chicken breast (mine was underdone), with roasted new potatoes (soggy) and creamy peas. Taste was pleasant but bland and I can cook something far better myself. Pudding was a few slices of micro thin pineapple and a tiny shot glass of frozen pina colada with a few pomegranate seeds, perfectly edible but not substantial or skilful. The cost of all this was €52. Breakfast cost €26 each and was not much more than some cereals, baguettes and bog standard mini croissants. The whole overnight stay for 2 adults and 2 teens sharing a bedroom suite (sofa bed) was over €700, we loved the place but the food was truly below what we should have got for that price. Maybe chef was having an off day…..

A very pleasant quirky experience

The Chateau and grounds were beautiful. The staff were friendly and accommodating. Our room was large and luxurious. The 3 course set dinner was tasty and the breakfast was excellent. The location is good for onward travel further south in France but the venue would also be good for a short break. No complaints. I'm sure we will be back.

Secluded and serene.

Regularly travelling from North Norfolk to a holiday home in South West France, Chateau de Saint Paterne is the perfect overnight stop on both the outward and return journey being so close yet secluded from the motorway. We have stayed in every room and enjoy all of them. The atmosphere, ambiance and history of this fascinating building offers the perfect antidote to the stress of modern motoring. The English speaking staff and hospitable owners are all welcoming and delightful, the decor is inspiring and the beds are super comfortable, the water hot! We can honestly say we look forward to staying at the Chateau more than arriving at our own French house!  5 stars.

A wonderful end to a summer road trip

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 11 months ago

This was our second visit and again we had a wonderful stay. The Chateau is just gorgeous the attention to detail and the decor is perfect you really feel like you are getting to experience a real French Chateau. We travelled with 2 children 9 and 11 who enjoyed the pool, badminton, table tennis and the lawn. They ate early made a couple of friends the same age who went off to play together whilst we could enjoy the evening meal outside it was such a perfect end to our road trip summer holiday. We wished we could have stayed for the second night but we will certainly be back again. Thank you so much

Great place to break journey, will do it again

We really liked this place. Nice rooms, nice grounds, sweet mint pool. It’s very relaxed. We took our dog, other people had babies and children. The format is everyone goes to the common area, a splendid reception room, for an aperitif at 7.30pm. You then all go to the dining room at 8. You get you own table, order your own wine, but everyone gets the same meal. It worked well. Good breakfast also.
