The Alexandrian, Autograph Collection

We've used this hotel many, many times over the years, but when Marriott took over its management, it quickly declined to the point that we swore five years ago never to return. We recently broke that oath and gave it another try in the hope that Marriott had finally gotten its act together. I'm sorry we did. The hotel might even be more of a shambles than it was five years ago. You can't help but get the feeling that they might be purposefully allowing it to deteriorate because they expect to close it down. We had no room phone. The jack had been physically cut out of the wall, and the phone was simply decoration since it wasn't connected to anything. On each of the three days we were there, we asked for it to be repaired, and on each of those three days we were simply ignored. The refrigerator didn't work, and we eventually had to fix that ourselves by pulling it out of its cabinet and moving it around the room until we found a working outlet for it. The television in our room didn't work either. It was finally fixed on the last day of our stay. On top of all that, the hotel is woefully understaffed. We repeatedly asked for luggage assistance on departure, and no one ever showed up to provide it. Eventually we had to take all our luggage down and load it ourselves, not an easy thing for a couple who's on in years to manage. Marriott should be ashamed to have its brand linked to this tribute to Faulty Towers, but it apparently doesn't much care.

I stay at this hotel a few times a year. Overall, it is great - wonderful location on historic King St: close to the restaurants, shops, entertainment. About a 5 minute walk from the water front and 15 minutes from the Metro (with frequent buses connecting). The atmosphere in the hotel is great, the staff are wonderful. The restaurant is traditionally Virginian. I really recommend staying. Rooms are a good size, the beds are very comfortable and given how noisy the street can be at night, not much street noise in the room. That may partly be because the heating/cooling system is incredibly loud. On the negative side - overall the hotel is overdue a serious renovation. Certain floors smell mouldy. I have seen vermin on past stays. Wall paper is peeling, Bathrooms are in need of a very deep clean. They also got rid of the pool during the pandemic. I don't think there is any hope of it coming back, but if it did, it would be a great addition. Finally - check your bill carefully at the end of your stay. They frequently add a destination fee ($25/night) when one is not included in the booked room rate. I have had to ask for it to be removed on multiple stays. Have your original reservation ready to show them when you check out, to prove there was no destination fee.

This hotel is wonderful! The location is right in the middle of everything! The room is comfortable;). We loved the complimentary water bottles and the complimentary evening cocktails! Sam the GM is a wonderful man who makes you feel welcome and comfortable! We can’t wait til our next trip!!

This hotel is very special to us, because we spent our wedding night here 45 years ago! We also spent the night here after our 25th anniversary party, which we had at the Mount Vernon Inn. It used to be called the Holiday Inn Old Town when we were here 45 years ago. This time we were here for a wedding reception. We first had cocktails in the outdoor courtyard for an hour, then went inside to a private room for a delicious dinner and very good service. The location is absolutely perfect, the rooms are huge, and the hospitality at front at the front desk is first rate. Parking is a little tricky in the underground garage, because the ceilings are low and you were worried you won’t find a parking spot! But we did! Love, the fact that La Madeleine is literally the next building across the street!
