Just two hours from midtown Manhattan, you will find a peaceful escape tucked into the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains. Settled in 1765, Troutbeck resides on a 43-acre estate and has welcomed guests as celebrated as Ernest Hemingway andTheodore Roosevelt over the years. Each aspect of the inn harmonizes with the natural setting, from the tastefully appointed bedrooms, to cuisine crafted from local herbs, produce and meats, to an intimate stone chapel for quiet meditations on life.

We were lucky enough to get a dinner reservation at Troutbeck on Christmas Day, and from the very beginning the experience was exceptional. The associates who helped us secure the reservation were kind, attentive, and made everything feel effortless. The drive in was beautiful—easy, scenic, and already setting the tone for something special. Once we arrived, the service was outstanding. Every interaction came with a smile, and the team struck that perfect balance of being present without ever feeling intrusive. And the dinner… truly unforgettable. We had an absolute feast for Christmas—dish after dish that was so good it almost didn’t feel real. Every plate was thoughtful, delicious, and absolutely worth the price and more. Troutbeck delivered a holiday meal we’ll be talking about for a long time. Wonderful setting, wonderful people, wonderful food. We’ll definitely be going back.

Truly disappointing. Very high nightly rates, bugs all over the room. Told the hotel in advance and when we arrived that we were celebrating a birthday and received no acknowledgement.

Overall, Troutbech was a pleasant, though very expensive experience. My partner and I stayed in the main house, which is old but charming. The waitstaff were attentive and pleasant. The grounds are immaculately groomed and provide places to sit and peacefully contemplate nature. The amenities, e,g., pool, spa, sauna, gym, are located in separate buildings and are excellent. But then you are paying a $35 per day resort fee whether you use those facilities - or not. The breakfasts are good and bargain-priced. Except for the coffee. However Troutbech offers free drip coffee in the morning with unlimited refills and it is as good as Starbuck’s dark roast, VERONA blend. So the strategy is to get your free coffee and bring it to the breakfast table. We only ate one dinner at Troutbech and it was expensive! I had the Pork entree, which was delicious, while my partner had the Steelhead Trout, which was not. Steelhead Trout is not a true trout; it tastes like a bland Atlantic Salmon. It was disappointing and not worth $44 . There were other flaws. We ordered two Cappuccinos at the bar and they tasted like warm water. No flavor whatsoever! My guess is their coffee beans are too old and have lost their flavor. At $8 a pop this is unforgivable. Lastly, the mattress in our room was way too soft for my taste. Almost no support. Also, the TV service would not access CNN or any other cable channels. All it showed was “ The View,” So would I go back? No. While Troutbech has its charm, $500 per day (plus taxes) is too much to pay given its flaws.

Such a lovely place. The grounds are beautiful and the rooms are luxurious, especially the bed. Thank you to manager David for welcoming us and Linda for helping with the reservation. We loved staying in the benton rooms. Don’t miss Monday night pasta night!

Upon arrival, the staff kept telling us that out room would be ready "any minute". Despite the posted check-in time at 4:00, the room wasn't ready until 6:00. We were hoping for an escape from city life. Instead, the construction outside of our room was noisier than a Brooklyn street. We had to keep our window shades closed, because there were construction workers outside everywhere we looked. The bathroom floor was more slanted than a skateboard ramp. Our children had to go into the public hallway to use their bathroom, which the house keeping staff completely ignored until we complained on the lat day. Despite the manager John's efforts to make it all right, we think the Troutbeck has a long way to go to live up to the idyllic upstate retreat it pretends to be.
