On the edge of the 17th Century Prinsengracht, the famed Dutch canal system UNESCO honors on its World Heritage List, Hotel Seven one Seven began as the home of a wealthy sugar trader. The rear house became a sugar mill, and in 1810 the trader built a voorhuis, or front house, that now welcomes guests to its nine cozy suites named after artists, composers and literary figures – sink into the deep blue elegance of the Von Goethe suite or gaze out over the Prinsengracht from the lofty Picasso suite.

Beautiful room in an old townhouse, right near the canals of Amsterdam. The location is absolutely perfect. The staff is friendly and overal the rooms were clean. However, I accidentally pulled the cover off the bed and I did find a long hair and something that looked like a piece of chocolate, or at least I hope it was something like that. Other than that, I loved my stay. As it is a beautiful hotel, I’m not sure I would give it a 5 star rating, 4 might be more accurate.

We had the joy of spending two nights at Hotel 717 after leaving our original hotel early. Honestly, this place made our trip! The hotel itself is boutique, stylish, and full of character. Our room was spotless, comfortable, and beautifully designed, with thoughtful touches like welcome drinks, quality amenities, and a nice turn-down service in the evenings. The bed was huge and super comfy, and the robes and slippers made it feel properly luxurious. We loved relaxing with cocktails in the courtyard, the whole atmosphere and aesthetic of the hotel is just gorgeous. But what really stood out was the staff. Everyone we met was genuinely friendly, attentive, and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. One lovely member of staff, even gave us a soap shaped like a little boathouse, and we really enjoyed the snacks in the room too. At check-out, they kindly stored our luggage. I later realised I’d left a box of chocolates in the fridge — completely my fault — and although housekeeping had already cleared the room, the team was so apologetic. As a gesture, they gifted us a beautiful box of goodies and even refunded some bits we’d put on the room. Georgio was especially kind and thoughtful — such a credit to the hotel. Honestly, I can’t fault a single thing. If I ever return to Amsterdam, this is where I’ll stay, and I’ll absolutely be recommending it to friends.

Definitely quirky, as others have said. A little obscure. And the steep staircases befit the age of the building. Anyway, we loved it. It’s a really gratifying balance of: luxe, boutique, shi-shi, and friendly. If you want an upscale hotel in the heart of Amsterdam that is not at all snooty, this is your place. Exactly what a “boutique hotel” should be. PS: breakfast is on point.

The Welcome Upon arriving, we received a very warm and friendly welcome. Our room was not ready as we arrived early and we were escorted to the lower level living room, and restaurant for a welcome drink. Throughout our visit, we were engaged by very friendly staff who were consistent in their desire to extend warm hospitality. Not For the Mobility Challenged From the street, you climb exterior stairs to access the lobby level. There’s no elevator in the building, so whether you’re going to your room or to the restaurant, you will take steps, some very shallow and steep. Our room was on the street level which means upon arrival you climbed stairs to get to the lobby, descend stairs to get to the lower level, walked outside into a courtyard to enter another hallway, taking you to room 26. Well Appointed Room (Suite 26) Our suite was well appointed with upscale fabrics, wall coverings, art work and furnishings. The layout of the room was unique, which essentially had a sleeping area with a lounge area. The bathroom is good size with room for two people to get ready at the same time. The lights and shades are controlled from a central panel with remotes on either side of the bed and in the bathroom. The suite has one window that looks onto the lower lobby (can be used to exit the building, but not enter the building), which allows for natural light, but you need the sheer/shade always down to keep from others from seeing in.
