On an unfortunate lay over in AMS due to flight disruption, the Anantara was a good reprieve
Due to weather (and to KLM’s / Schipols’s inability to operate flights in -1 degree) I got stuck in AMS on a flight back from Jakarta for more than 2 days. I booked my own hotel - the Anantara - which I knew from Asia and a had a reasonable pricepoint (ie will claim from KLM). I enjoyed my stay for as much as was possible with the unknowns of getting away, no warm clothes, etc etc. Everyone at the hotel were very kind.

Horrible Customer Service and Room Reeked of Cigarette Smoke
I've never reviewed a hotel before but felt compelled to share that this was one of the worst experiences we've ever had. Our flight was delayed so my wife and our 2 young daughters and I arrived late at 5:30pm. We had booked one room with a king bed and one room with 2 beds. It took about 25 minutes at the desk before finally finding out that only one of our two rooms was ready. We had an appointment so rushed out and when we returned at 7:30pm the second room was still not ready. At 8pm we received keys to the second room only to discover that the room was uninhabitable as it reeked of cigarette smoke. We were told it would be cleaned or we would be moved. At 10:30pm we returned to find the room still smelled and no new room was arranged. There was now new staff that had to be brought up to speed. Ultimately they gave us a room but it was a floor away from our children. One nice woman let us know that the reason for the initial delay was that the hotel knew the room smelled horrible and they were trying to clear the smell before we arrived. But now they would take a few days to air out before trying to rent it again. And at the end of the day we weren't offered any compensation and in fact were mistakenly over charged on our invoice.

Wonderful birthday in Amsterdam
This hotel is a 10 out of 10. The room, the location but especially the people are outstanding. The staff is really amazing and the ladies at the breakfast (they sung for me), but especially Emily from the Restaurant made my birthday in Amsterdam unforgettable. Thank you very much for these wonderful days in this fanatastic hotel.
