Went on a solo trip to Antigua and had a great stay at Porta Hotel! It was conveniently located - just walking distance from a bunch of good restaurants, coffee shops, bars and stores. Despite it being near a lot of establishments, it was pretty quiet in my room and I got to sleep well. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. The room was clean, spacious and cozy, had all the amenities I needed, and I really appreciated how the room had a massive jar of water. Definitely recommend!

Let me start by saying, I’m hard pressed to ever leave a poor review for any establishment. I stayed one night as part of a tour. Perhaps their customer service is so apathetic because they cater to large tour groups that breeze in and out for short stays. Who knows. Not an excuse in my opinion for a 5 star hotel at a 5 star price. First, the room. It was decent. Spent an hour killing flies. That got old quick. The ceiling fan was broken. They said there was an electrical problem so all fans in the hotel were locked off. There’s AC, though. However, needed a fan because the bugs were landing on the bed. Oddly, the bathroom has one of those industrial 2-in-1 light/fans that’s so loud you can’t talk to the person standing right next to you or hear thoughts in your head. I’d expect these at a 1 or 2 star roadside motel built decades ago and never updated. Very unpleasant. I kept the light off so I wouldn’t have to listen to it. I wouldn’t stay here again based on that alone. And the bar soap was wet, used and re-wrapped. Ick. This is what really got me, truly. The restaurant, Los Moros- service was abysmal. Let’s just say non existent. I was totally ignored. I sat at the table for almost 30 minutes- nobody even poured a glass of water. I watched 2 other parties walk in and get served right away. I tried smiling and making eye contact with the ladies, like hello, can someone please help here?! It was quite obvious. Nothing. Mind you, the restaurant was almost empty- maybe four tables. Being busy wasn’t the issue. So, I leave, to enjoy dinner outside the hotel, which wasn’t easy to find. On the way out, I stopped by the front desk to let them know what happened. It was like talking to a wall. No apology, no concern shown. Actually, no response at all. Just more of feeling ignored and invisible, like I felt in their restaurant. Also, mentioned my room was full of flies; Just ignored that, too. I let it be. The location. A half mile walk to the center. There isn’t much around the hotel itself. It borders the outskirts of the historic center. A few restaurants around, but not great ones. The area feels dead. Through the night, I heard traffic and cats fighting. It’s fine for a hotel of any level to have shortcomings, and things go awry sometimes. It’s how it’s dealt with that makes all the difference in the world. It’s about people and service. This is what I found shockingly, almost comically bad here. And this is the opposite of Guatemalan hospitality.
