Reviews for Athenaeum InterContinental Athens

Not suitable for independent travellers

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

I had booked this hotel 6 months prior to my stay in May 2024 through using Ambassador Weekend Night Certificate and further three nights using my points. When I checked in, I was informed that the roof top restaurant was closed due to refurbishment for all of May 2024. This was disappointing as I was looking forward to using this facility. They offered me a classic room with a city view on the 6th floor for my 5 nights stay. The room was dated and was not the standard I was expecting, as it was a late check in nearly 11pm I agreed to stay the first night. I found the room had noisy air conditioning unit, bathroom toilet did not flush properly nor did the bath with overhead shower drain was blocked and the ventilator not functional. In the morning, I reported this to their Guest Relations who was very attenuative and noted all my concerns and said she would investigate it and apologised for the inconvenience caused. After breakfast they had offered me another room in the same category on the 8th Floor and said they would upgrade me to a suite but not until the next day. I moved to the 8th Floor and found it to be acceptable and decided we didn’t want to be further inconvenienced to move again so we decided to stay in this room. This is the first time I have ever had such an experience as I have been a platinum member for over 20 years and now an ambassador status on their reward programme. I felt instead of being recognised as a loyal client they had downgraded my experience. I did at one point think of moving to a different hotel if it wasn’t for the kindhearted and thoughtfulness of Constantine the guest relations staff member. The hotel seems to cater for packages and business clients, there were a lot of packaged tourists and cruise transit guests at the time of my visit. The hotel needs updating and refurbishment and far from a five-star status it seems to be managed by faceless operational management who stay away from their guests. Although its location is reasonable from the city centre and public transport, there are much better hotels in Athens that offer much better facilities and accommodation. Breakfast is an average buffet service and expensive(36 euros per head) in relation to what is offered and dining options including room service menu could be improved. This hotel is not suitable for independent travellers who value privacy with good facilities and ambience. I would not recommend this hotel to loyalty members.

Nice, clean hotel, but poor location

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

This was a pretty decent hotel, and I honestly go between 3 & 4 stars, but giving them 4 stars. The hotel is nice inside. The rooms are good and spacious. There's a refrigerator in the room which is good. The bathrooms are nice and big. Plus, it had a tub! My husband actually took a nice soak after our long flight over. But be aware, it's a pretty narrow tub, which is fine for us short people. We did notice that the tub is tall though, only because some friends we were traveling with commented, which made us notice it too. The husband had a knee injury, to it was too hard for him to get his leg over. I have to say, the towels were great too! Nice and big, plus they were soft. We only ate at the breakfast buffet, which had a huge variety. Yes, it was the same every day, but there were plenty of things to pick from. Now, we didn't pick this hotel ourselves. We were there on an extension through a cruise. Saying that, it's why I ended up giving them the 4 stars. We didn't pick it, because if we did, I would have been disappointed with the location. There was nothing to go to or do in the area. When we did go to see things in Athens on our own, which was only 1 day, we had to take a taxi there and back, which was about €10 each way. And our guide at the hotel, from our cruise company, made sure to tell us this. She told us because some taxi drivers will want to "quote" you a price. She said to make sure they tell you an approximate cost, but also that they turn on a meter. Some rooms do give you a view of the Acropolis. And, they have a rooftop bar, but unfortunately, it was closed when we were there, as was the outdoor pool. Again, if you're looking for a nice, clean hotel, this is good. But if you're there to also tour the city, then it's not in the best location and you'll spend time traveling to get to the sites and restaurants.

Great stay! Cocal Cola at 9 Euros!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We had a couple of days in Athens before heading to the Greek islands. I did a lot of research and watched several travel videos. At the end decided to book the Intercontinental and was not disappointed. The options closer to the Acropolis were expensive and clearly not as nice. Yes, it is not inside the tourist part of the city and a taxi to and from will cost you around 6 euros and takes you 10 mins. However, not being inside the busy tourist neighborhoods allows some piece and quiet and a great stay with spacious rooms, good all-around service, and faster access to the airport. Overall, a better hotel at a much more attractive rate. I would happily stay here again when visiting Athens again. However…a small bottle of Coca Cola is 9 euros. This is the most absurd overpriced anything I have ever seen in my life! Very upset a hotel even has the courage to charge this amount when in any high scale restaurante in the city it is less than half that price!

Very nice hotel

The hotel is strategically located in the city. About a 45 minute drive from the airport. The rooms are very nice. The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. The bar area is great. The breakfast is excellent, with a wide variety of options.

It’s just OK.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

We are a family of three adults. We stayed there for 5 days. The package included breakfast but the food remained the same every day. The price performance was OK but it was not the same quality of other intercontinental hotels, not 5 stars at all. So don’t expect too much or any smile from the front desk, the restaurant or the concierge. When we were there, the swimming pool was closed due to not yet the high season. There were some other charges like room service and city tax €10/day besides the hotel tax. I thought if they should have to inform the guest before or during the check in, miscommunication would not be occurred. We ordered a burger which cost €25, we paid €5 for tips. Then during the check out, we found that they charged another €5 for service charge, which wasn’t shown in the bill before; otherwise we shouldn’t be paying total €10 for a €25 burger. Anyway, I would not rate high in this hotel. But it was not bad though.
