Troubles Melt Away at HGB

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

Just completed an incredible stay at Hotel Grande Bretagne. As other reviewers have said, the staff are marvelous, in particular Anastasia and Maria who handle the online chat, and Rania at the front desk. We had to make multiple changes to our plans due to terrible airline delays, and they accommodated our every need. They even organised breakfast and early check-in when we finally arrived, which meant we were enjoying coffee, Greek pastries and the breathtaking view of the Parthenon from a sunlit balcony just a few minutes later. The facilities are spectacular, spotless and well-maintained, whether it is the shop, the spa and fitness room, the grand lobby bar or the first floor lounge, which is in a beautifully landscaped private courtyard. We are returning to HGB to end our vacation and can't wait to experience it again. Highly recommend the hotel and their amazing team.

Classic hotel experience in Athens

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

The hotel is perfect in terms of location (most of the main parts of the city you'll want to visit are 10-15 min walk or closer) plus having your breakfast on the rooftop with a perfect view of the Acropolis is so memorable and lovely. Everyone who worked there was super nice and accommodating. We had a room on the first floor with a small balcony overlooking the square which was very special. Classic grand hotel experience. Worth the price.

Best hotel I've stayed at in Athens

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

I have stayed in a couple of hotels in Athens and this is the best. The staff are always friendly and helpful, in particular those serving breakfast. The hotel is well appointed and maintained, and is very conveniently located opposite Syntagma Square and very close to both an underground station and the Numismatic Museum. The view of the Parthenon at breakfast is breathtaking.

Overpriced and old

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

This hotel is in a fantastic location, right next to Syntagma Square and walking distance to all the sights. The common areas like the lobby and downstairs bar are beautiful. We also greatly enjoyed breakfast and dinner upstairs at GB Roof Garden with a fantastic view. Unfortunately…the rooms are horribly dated, small, and non functional. We had a deluxe room with a city view on a high floor that ran us almost $1,000 USD a night. The yellow paint color, carpet, and small chair in the corner were just ugly and old. The hotel boasts AC as a feature, but the thermostat is ancient and you have no idea what it’s set to. The bathroom is a nightmare. Like other reviewers pointed out, the shower is way too small! I am small at 5’3” and still felt cramped, so I can’t imagine how it would work with a larger person. There are NO working outlets in the bathroom, so have fun styling your hair if you’re a woman! There are no shelves for storage, and the only full length mirror was blocked by the towel hooks, so I constantly had to move the towels to see myself. Overall, the bathroom is not fit for modern standards. Finally, the only reason we booked the hotel was to enjoy the pool in the Athens heat, but we had a huge issue with the server the one day we went. I ordered a cocktail and despite only a few people being at the pool, she never brought it out to me. Oh well, not a big deal. We accepted that service wasn’t good and got up to leave about 30 minutes later. Well…as I was leaving, the waitress suddenly remembered exactly who I was, what I ordered, and presented me with the bill! I pointed out to her that she never brought the drink out (???) and all she could say was “oh?” It felt like a total scam that she could remember the drink to bill…but not to make it and bring it out to me? Overall, not worth the price whatsoever and probably the worst value hotel I’ve ever stayed at. Marriott should be ashamed by what they’re charging. The location and common areas of this hotel have fantastic potential, but as other reviews have pointed out, the rest of the hotel needs a lot of work.

Great city Centre hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

I stayed here while attending a conference at the hotel. From a tourist point of view, the hotel is perfectly situated, right on Syntagma Square. The Metro station entrance is right outside, and the hotel is a stone’s throw from the Parliament Building and the changing of the guard. My room did not face the street so I did not have any problems with noise. The view from the GB restaurant is stunning. I only had breakfast in there, but there was a great selection of food, both on the buffet and available to order from the menu. The staff throughout the hotel were polite and attentive. The only fly in the ointment was on my last morning, the maid woke me up at 8.30 wanting to service the room. Given that checkout time is 11am, this felt a bit premature. Overall, I recommend the hotel.

I traveled to Greece in June of 2004 and had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Grande Bretagne after its multimillion-dollar renovation. The hotel was absolutely impeccable in every way. Our room was palatial, the service was fantastic and the dinner we enjoyed at the rooftop restaurant was truly an evening to remember with the fantastic view of the Acropolis.

My experience with the Grande Bretagne exceeded my expectations on every account. The hotel was beautiful and the room was amazing. Dinner was exceptional - definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Greece.
