Reviews for NJV Athens Plaza

Very old, overpriced outdated hotel in a dire need of a massive gut/renovation.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

The hotel is located in a good location however the hotel itself has not been up kept nor renovated for many, many years. Don't believe the pictures of the hotel premises/rooms on their website, they are inaccurate/photoshopped ! When we arrived at the hotel Dimitrious at the reception told us that my 3 booked rooms were cleaned and ready for us and that they would all be next to each other as I have previously requested ( I traveled with 5 kids hence needing all 3 rooms next to each other). We were given 3 rooms (1 Superior and 2 Executive rooms on the 3rd floor).Upon arriving on the 3rd floor, we right away smelled foul odor (mold/mildew) from the hallway carpets and noticed black scuff marks on the walls ( no one has re-painted or even up kept those walls in many years). The walls in the hallways/rooms have black skuff marks, furniture in the rooms is ancient looking ( 1950's), furniture is chipped/scratched throughout and stained. In one of the Executive rooms, the white bedding which seemed to be freshly made had multiple black stains and the old gray velvet headboard had unknown brown stains on it which was absolutely disgusting! Very old floor carpets throughout which smell like mold/sewer ( the smell in the rooms was pungent the moment you open the door and unbearable; one of the Executive rooms smelled like sewer). The mattresses are old, sunken and not suitable for a good night sleep. Grout is chipped/missing in the room bathrooms ( some grout had visible black mold spots), old marble tiles on bathroom floor have visible large cracks, no body wash provided ( just tiny/sample sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner), black hairs inside the bathtub which is sickening and water stays barely luke warm when showering. When I booked the NJV hote/ rooms, the pictures and the descriptions on the site were not what the rooms look like in real life! I was so disgusted that I asked the bell boy to bring our luggage back downstairs as I would not sleep in those rooms. Bell boy was very helpful, tried calling the reception to see if we can have different rooms but Dimitrious from the reception told him that "they were all booked out". I tried to reason with him explaining that the rooms that were given to us are below Motel grade level and that my children will not sleep in a room which smells like mold. Dimitrious was not helpful at all so I had to get a manager involved who came upstairs to the 3rd floor, looked inside each room, walked around, smelled them and said "You are right, I'm so sorry!". I even showed her their website pictures of the hotel as well as different room categories explaining to her how what you see on the site is not what the hotel looks like in real life). She persisted to say that they don't have anymore available rooms for us and that in best case scenario they would have to give us 3 rooms on 3 different floors, hence split us up. I explained that I have 5 kids and cannot be multiple floors away from them. She told us to go walk around Athens while they'll try to figure something out. No phone call, no message apologizing nor letting us know that the new rooms were prepped and ready. We came back to the hotel at almost 8 oclock and the rooms still were not ready for us; we had to sit in the lobby for almost 30 more minutes. We were so tired and frustrated/dissapointed with the hotel staff. Eventually she gave us 1 Superior Room on the 1rst floor and 2 Executive Rooms on the 7th ( which looked exactly like the ones on the 3rd floor but didnt smell as bad). This is not what I booked nor what I expected. She offered us complimentary breakfast ( which they typically charge 32 Euros per person) next day for all of our troubles. I do not recommend NJV Plaza Athens Hotel to anyone visiting Athens. The hotel is very overpriced, old and is a dire need of a complete gut/renovation.

DISAPPOINTED and felt SCAMMED

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I am extremely disappointed with my recent stay at NJV Athens Plaza Hotel. My family and I booked two rooms: a large suite and another room with two separate twin beds. Upon arrival, the hotel attempted to charge extra for my young son staying in the suite, and then tried to charge extra for an additional guest in the twin room, despite there being only two guests staying in a room that already had two beds. It simply made no sense and felt like an attempt to extract additional charges wherever possible. What made the situation worse was the attitude of the reception staff. The receptionist we dealt with was rude, unhelpful, and unwilling to find a solution. Rather than offering to speak with management or assist in resolving the issue, she repeatedly insisted on the charge and refused to escalate the matter. We asked for management involvement, but our concerns were ignored. The following day, we received another call to the room regarding the same issue and were once again pressured about payment. To our surprise, the hotel then proceeded to charge my card €120 for an alleged extra guest. This was extremely frustrating and left us feeling completely undervalued as customers. What makes this experience even more disappointing is that I have been a loyal guest of this hotel for many years. My family and I stay here regularly, usually twice a year, and have always chosen the property because of its excellent location. Unfortunately, the service has deteriorated significantly. The rooms are also showing their age and urgently need renovation. The room we were assigned was old, tired, and well below the standard expected of a hotel in this category. There are clearly upgraded rooms available, and it felt as though we were placed in an inferior room despite our long history with the hotel. The only reason we continue to consider this hotel is its location. Sadly, poor customer service, unnecessary charges, and outdated rooms have completely overshadowed that advantage. After this experience, I will seriously reconsider staying here again and cannot recommend the hotel to others.

Attentive, Warm Staff! Best Location!!!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

My stay at NJV Athens Plaza was excellent from start to finish. The hotel exceeded my expectations in every way. The room was spacious, clean, comfortable, and very well maintained throughout my stay. Housekeeping did an excellent job every day, ensuring the room was spotless and welcoming. What truly sets this hotel apart is its people. The reception team and all hotel staff were exceptionally helpful, professional, responsive, and genuinely service-oriented. Every request was handled promptly and with a smile, making us feel valued and well taken care of throughout our stay. The location is simply unbeatable. Situated directly at Syntagma Square, it is within walking distance of Athens’ major attractions, shopping streets, restaurants, and transportation links. For first-time visitors to Athens, I cannot imagine a more convenient location. I was also pleasantly surprised by the quality of the in-room dining. The food was consistently good, and the service was efficient and reliable. NJV Athens Plaza combines outstanding service, comfort, and an unbeatable location. It made our visit to Athens seamless and enjoyable. I would not hesitate to stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city. For me, this is truly one of the best hotels in Athens. They are 100/10!!!

Perfect location and luxurious accommodation

We had a suite and it was very big and luxurious. The bathroom was larger than most bathrooms in Europe. The room had all the amenities you would need. The only caution I would give would be that the traffic noise can be heard throughout the night. The breakfast were excellent and had lots of choices I would highly recommend this hotel for location to all the sites in Athens.

Just back from a week in Athens, staying at the NJV Athens Plaza. This was our 5th visit to Athens & we stayed at the NJV the last 3 times. It's a lovely, modern hotel in an ideal location, central to all the sights. Staff are very friendly and helpful and a special thanks to Anna Barda who helped us with our booking, she was such a lovely person when we met her during our stay. Breakfast was good and varied and staff very attentive. Our room was was kept exceptionally clean and bar staff friendly and efficient. We would love to return to Athens one day and would definitely stay at the NJV.
