About the Hotel

For when you need to lay back, lean in, or get immersed in the flavors and culture of the live music capital of the world, you know something memorable is about to happen at Thompson Austin. A place for locals and visitors to let loose poolside or at the restaurants and bars, where the luxe, contemporary vibe is signature Thompson — bold but not showy, complex yet confidently relaxed. With dramatic Austin cityscape views on display, the residential feel of the accommodations creates a setting to refresh and get ready for anything. Check into rooms, suites or residences offering moody hues, gorgeous custom furnishings, floor-to-ceiling windows with roller shade window coverings, and elegant plank floors in a warm gray wood grain. The custom décor mixes midcentury modern with late-century luxury, resulting in elegant spaces that will make you take pause before heading back out into the city. This untamed urban playground celebrates serious revelry from the moment you encounter the lobby’s airy atmosphere of light and shadow, offset by the bold geode-inspired architecture.

A fun birthday getaway

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

We had a lovely birthday weekend at the Thompson Austin thanks to wonderful staff and the beautiful accommodations in our residence studio suite on the 16th floor. The room was stunning and comfortable. We did not use the pool because it looked a bit murky, but it was crowded and a pretty space. The rooftop cantina is beautiful and staffed with helpful, charming people. Valet service was easy and smooth. Everyone was gracious and welcoming. We would stay again!

A tale of two cities....sort of.

This is a difficult one. Its not often the experience of the hotel is shaped by the environment around it, but this is one. The hotel first: modern, clean, with all the amenities you'd expect for the rating, cant fault it. On first sight, a good location with lots going on. But there's the issue. The hotel is right next to 6th street which is a cauldron of noise from dozens of bars & clubs, late afternoon to the early hours. Maybe we were unlucky in that our stay was thurs to sunday, but it felt like every hen & stag night in Texas was out in the streets (if you're driving, beware; 6th street is cordoned off at night creating a labyrinth of one-way driving & the police will NOT let you through). We tried to escape but every bar we found had some form of ear-splitting noise loosely described as music. It even spilled over into the hotel bar where there was a DJ producing a mix of techno-latino-rap bordering on torture. I suspect there was some sort of graduation weekend going on as the pool was always mega-busy with little chance of finding any space. Perhaps you're younger, love this kind of thing and it sounds great. If so, this hotel could be ideal. On the plus side, an ideal location for a drive out to the Alamo and a short walk to the sensational Capitol building is a must if you love architecture & history.

Wonderful stay!

Enjoyed my stay. Clean and nice rooms, great food options. In the center of downtown Austin. Nice pool though I wish it was bigger. Breakfast was delicious. Baby friendly with pack and play crib available!
