The bungalows at Hotel Tjampuhan & Spa are carved from indigenous timber and adorned with Balinese artwork, fully immersed in the natural beauty and spiritual energy that defines Ubud. The hotel was built in 1928 for guests of Prince Ubud, and in the 1930s, the area became an artist colony, attracting its most illustrious resident, the German primitive painter Walter Spies. Spies’s two-story bungalow, restored to its historical splendor and available for retreats, presides over a lotus pond in the middle of the Balinese rainforest, where a meditative state is as easy to obtain as a breath of fresh air.

Hotel Tjampuhan was absolutely beautiful and I will definitely be back. Thank you so much to Octavianni, Mia, and Apriana for your amazing hospitality and for making it such a lovely experience. The Spa location and surrounding environment is unmatched, and this is the perfect place to have a peaceful break, and just minutes from Ubud Palace. Suksma 🙏

This is a review for my family’s stay at Hotel Tjampuhan in Ubud, Bali. My family spent one month at Tjampuhan Hotel this winter and my wife and I have been staying there during our trips to Bali for the last 10 years. The magical ingredient in Bali is the Balinese themselves. They are an intensely nature connected and spiritual people and being in their presence you will feel their happiness and your own. The staff of Hotel Tjampuhan radiate this quality. The other magical aspect is the grounds of Hotel Tjampuhan, which are simply amazing, perched overlooking the edge of a hundred foot deep jungle ravine complete with a river. On the terraced side of the ravine sit dozens of small houses each housing one hotel room or more. Included is the artist residence of Walter Spies, built in the late 1920’s for the famous painter and which will house 4 or possibly more people. Two swimming pools are available to facilitate cooling off during the day while enjoying the jungle views and the call of the birds. One is a natural spring pool and uses a minimal amount of chlorine, the other is located near the underground spa and is more modern. We had breakfast at the restaurant buffet each morning and my wife and daughter and I absolutely loved it. We became friends with the staff over time and in particular Tri, a smiley and kind manager came to be quite close to our daughter. The restaurant makes a wonderful mix of traditional Balinese cuisine along with fresh fruits and more modern cuisine as well. I am a bit picky about my food and I was very happy to be enjoying our breakfast each day with the wonderful view out into the treetops above the ravine. We had a few special experiences during our stay. One of them was having the staff and entire restaurant sing happy birthday to our daughter who turned 7 during our stay. Our daughter was absolutely delighted with both the singing and with the chocolate brownie decorated with her name along with candles and she will hopefully end up having this as a lifetime memory. Another special experience was the temple ceremony. One of the days we dressed with a respectful ceremonial sarong around our legs and attended the ceremony at the medium sized temple on the hotel grounds. The regional king of Ubud attended and we were treated with kindness and welcomed to watch all parts of their ceremony. Afterwards, Gusti the general manager of the hotel, kindly invited us to a traditional buffet with everyone from the ceremony and we felt honored to be included. The next evening we walked to the far end of the hotel grounds to watch the festivities continue in the much larger temple located further down the river. When we got to the bridge Gusti was there. He graciously told us about the ceremony and a lot of the history of the hotel. While we were talking the son of the king came over the bridge and Gusti introduced us. Gusti again made us feel very welcome and clearly went out of his way to honor us as guests. We were very grateful to be treated so kindly and given a small view into their ceremony, dress and customs. It is true that the hotel was built close to a 100 years ago and some areas are as you might expect a little dated. I see that as part of the charm…and know I will be disappointed if I go seeking perfection. Gusti, also informed us that they are renovating some of the rooms and while we were there we watched a team refurbishing a good percentage of the stone paths as well as performing updates on some of the rooms. The hotel also has a wonderfully ornate spa that is built into a cave of sorts…with columns carved out with spirits and jungle animals that peer down on you while you alternate between the hot waters and plunging into an icy bath. My advice…come stay in the hotel and learn about it’s history and witness the beauty of the grounds, learn about the Balinese and how their spirituality makes them so unique and enjoy the genuine kindness of the wonderful staff at Hotel Tjampuhan.

My husband and I have stayed at Hotel Tjampuhan during all six of our trips to Bali, and we love it so much that we spend months there at a time. Everyone working there is incredibly kind and attentive. They always go out of their way to make our stay pleasant and memorable. They are exceptionally—and genuinely—caring with our 8-year-old daughter, whom everyone knows by name. The breakfast buffet is something we look forward to every morning, and the spa is a truly luxurious experience to treat yourself with. Our stays there have always been excellent, and we look forward to many more visits in the future.

Tjampuhan Hotel has everything I love about Bali in one place: a magical location, great service, and truly fantastic people. Everyone is so kind, lovely, and always willing to help. I adore the view over the forest; it gives such an enchanting, calming feeling that makes it perfect for recharging. The rooms are super clean and cozy, and the restaurant serves delicious food, both international and local. The spa is simply amazing. Honestly, there’s no other place I’d rather stay when I’m in Ubud. It’s also very easy to reach the city center and all the main attractions. Highly recommended! ✨
