In these difficult times when even getting to Cuba is an adventure, this resort proves it is well worth it. The rooms are wonderful, the beach is spectacular, and the buildings are stunningly beautiful. Of course, the best part about of coming to Cuba is the warm welcome we Canadians receive. I stayed at the Gran Muthu Almirante in Holguín, Cuba, from April 22nd to 25th. Although it is advertised as a 5-star hotel, the dining experience is more like a 3-star level. There is little variety in the main dishes, they run out quickly, and the buffet is restrictive, with no à la carte options. The salads are varied, but the pastries are very poor, always the same low-quality sweets. In the snack bar, the 24-hour food options are also limited. Additionally, when serving coffee, there is no sugar on the tables; the staff decide how many spoonfuls you get and take the sugar bowl away. Another serious issue is that, when there are power outages in the area, you are completely disconnected: no wifi, no television in the room, as the channels rely on internet. If you are going to charge as a 5-star hotel, then provide all the quality that is expected; if not, just lower the price to a more realistic level. Very dis inting for a hotel of this cost.

Our third stay at this location. The VIP section was the área used for the hotel reopening last week (suite style rooms in the normally adults only section). The food quality, diversity, preparation and restaurant service was far beyond our expectations: steak, fresh fish, smoked salmón, roasted pork, baked and stewed chicken, spaghetti, variety of vegetables, bread, meat and cheese, olives and condiments, a fantastic dessert buffet and five flavors of quality ice cream, red and white wine and Bucanera beer on tap. There were no shows, salon services, rooftop bar and billiards, and minimal animation. The catamaran is included no matter what you may be told at the Nautica área. All bar service áreas were hospitable and efficient. The animation team did their best with límited staff. We would return in a heartbeat if we could find transportation.

I would like to recognize the outstanding service provided by Carlos (Zaldivar ) an employee at the snack bar. I have been to the hotel many times and from the very first day that i met him, his energy and enthusiasm stood out. He has an incredibly infectious personality that genuinely enhances the guest experience. His positive attitude is constant, and he creates a welcoming atmosphere that makes guests feel comfortable and valued. What impressed me most is how well he knows the clients. He remembers returning guests, greets people by name, and seems to anticipate what they like. That personal touch makes a big difference in an all-inclusive setting where service can sometimes feel routine. With him, it never does. He also speaks more than one language, which is a tremendous asset in an international resort. He easily switches between languages to make sure everyone feels included and understood. It’s clear that communication and hospitality come naturally to him. Overall, he is a true asset to the hotel. His professionalism, warmth, and ability to connect with guests elevate the entire snack bar experience. Employees like him are a big part of why guests choose to return.
