Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok

I chose Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok for my 40th birthday staycation, and the timing could hardly have been more meaningful — I turned 40 in the same year that the hotel celebrates its 150th anniversary. The hotel has an atmosphere that is difficult to capture in photographs alone. There is history in the architecture and interiors, but everything still feels beautifully cared for. I especially enjoyed taking my time walking around the property, noticing the details and simply watching life along the Chao Phraya River. My stay was not only about the room. Afternoon tea, beautiful dinners and quiet moments around the hotel became part of the experience, and I appreciated being able to enjoy everything without rushing. The service was another highlight. The team was gracious and attentive throughout my stay, and their thoughtful touches made my birthday celebration feel genuinely personal. Thank you to everyone who helped make it such a lovely occasion. For me, luxury is not only about how beautiful a hotel looks. It is also about how a place makes you feel while you are there, and Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok has a wonderful sense of warmth beneath all that elegance. Celebrating my 40th birthday here, during the hotel's 150th anniversary year, is a memory I am very happy to take home with me. A beautiful stay at one of Bangkok's most iconic riverside addresses.

Mandarin Oriental Bangkok ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️ A beautiful, timeless property with that classic Mandarin Oriental sense of luxury and heritage. Location : fantastic — directly across from ICONSIAM and facing the famous Chao Phraya River. I honestly don’t find it inconvenient at all. A quick Grab or taxi gets you to the central shopping areas, while you get to enjoy a quieter side of Bangkok. I’m more than happy to have a little side of luxury away from the noise. Highlight : 1) Butler service It was exceptional. I genuinely cannot express how friendly and warm the butler team was. They were so attentive and genuinely happy to help that, at times, I almost felt bad for actually utilising the service! 😂 That level of warmth made a real difference. 2) The massage — genuinely the best massage I’ve ever had in a hotel or perhaps any experience. No wonder the spa is recognised by Forbes. 3) Strings orchestral arrangement at the Lobby Bar. Sitting there with a cocktail & enjoying the classical live music was truly luxurious The one major let-down was the breakfast buffet selection. I found it quite disappointing compared with other Mandarin Oriental properties around the world. I expected better quality of produce and wider variety Still, a beautiful hotel with incredible heritage, exceptional butler service and two experiences — the spa and Lobby Bar — that I’ll definitely remember.

We have just completed a 2½-day stay at the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok. It is an excellent hotel in a spectacular location on the Chao Phraya River, although there are a few shortcomings. 1. First, there was no offer of an upgrade, despite it being rainy season. By comparison, when we stayed at the Peninsula directly across the river in January, during a busier period, we were immediately offered an upgraded room without asking. 2. Second, the bathroom is very dark, which made it difficult for my partner to get ready to go out. 3. The more significant issue is that the gym, spa and one of the restaurants are located across the river. Getting to the gym, for example, involves changing, walking through the lobby, waiting for the ferry, crossing the river, waiting again and then walking to the gym. What should be a quick workout becomes unnecessarily cumbersome. The same applies to accessing the other facilities on the opposite bank. Those points aside, the hotel is beautifully maintained and the service is exceptional. There are staff everywhere, and they are consistently attentive without being intrusive. The food and drink service at the non-speciality restaurants was also very good, although not particularly memorable. We did not try the more expensive Chinese or French restaurants. The hotel is expensive, but the quality of the service and the setting go a long way towards justifying the price. Overall, a very good stay, albeit with a few practical drawbacks.

Our last couple of days in Bangkok before returning home. What a great stay. Upon arrival, service was excellent. At check in, they went out of the way to be helpful, confirming connecting rooms and trying to assist with a late checkout which was appreciated. Our rooms were lovely with a nice view. We ate at the buffet for dinner and the staff were very kind with accomodating dietary restrictions. Breakfast was great and in a lovely setting on the water. The pool staff were excellent and helpful and kind. the pool was lovely. the hotel is traditional but with all amenities you would wish for in a great location. What really struck me was the excellent service throughout our stay, from check in to buffet to pool to breakfast, the concierge and the staff at the front door. Really well done - no wonder you are still considered number 1 in Bangkok 150 years on.

We booked a 3-night stay this past May to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary, booking through the Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) program along with our Fans of M.O. membership. Given the FHR benefits, we were looking forward to a complimentary room upgrade, but our check-in experience left us feeling misled. We were initially assigned an "upgraded" Verandah room, which was very disappointing. The room itself was quite compact, the verandah was too small to truly enjoy, and it was located on a low floor facing away from ICONSIAM with a subpar river view. Calling that room an "upgrade" felt deceptive—honestly, it should be sold at a lower rate than standard rooms. We asked to be moved back to the original room category we had reserved. The staff member agreed to check for availability, so we stepped out for lunch while waiting. When we returned, we were moved to our originally requested room, and it was night and day—spacious, comfortable, and vastly superior to the first room. However, while the front desk staff did not explicitly say "no," their reluctance and subtle irritation were noticeable, which got our milestone anniversary off to an uncomfortable start. The Pros: The river view from our second room was truly spectacular (5/5). The complimentary private shuttle boat service running every 30 minutes to ICONSIAM and nearby piers was punctual and extremely convenient. The Cons: Breakfast became repetitive by the second day (2.5/5). The overall selection was limited, and mangoes were only served in small, pre-portioned slices rather than generously. Staff service felt mixed and lacked the genuine warmth expected at this level (3/5). At this price point, we expected flawless hospitality and a much better dining experience. If we return to Bangkok, we will likely explore other luxury options offering superior breakfast selections and better recognition of loyalty benefits.
