Relaxing afternoon in a gorgeous setting

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

My husband and I stopped in for coffee during a visit to Bath and had a lovely experience. We’d heard good things about the hotel and decided to call in after lunch with friends. All the staff were welcoming and friendly but I just wanted to give a special mention to Oscar, who we found to be particularly attentive and knowledgeable about the local area. He took the time to recommend places to visit, including Sydney Gardens, The Holburne Museum and Prior Park. We ended up visiting all three and thoroughly enjoyed them all! We will definitely be returning.

The level and quality of service does match the high prices

The Bath Priory is set in beautiful gardens within historic buildings. Our junior suite was lovely, offering amazing park views, and the bathroom was stunning and impressively spacious. The one negative side to the accommodation were the glass doors for the toilet, shower and bathroom. Also, the fold-up bed was very uncomfortable, and an emergency light shone directly into my face all night, which disturbed my sleep. The walls are not soundproofed and someone’s alarm in the room next door to our suite woke me up at 5am. The spa is pleasant, though the pool is tiny and the relaxation area room felt cold because the patio French doors had been left open. I chose the ‘relaxed’ Pantry restaurant to dine at, as visiting Bath Spa University with two teenage neurodivergent lads, but it did not feel relaxed. We waited 45 minutes for our main courses (we didn’t order starters). The menu seemed overpriced, staff were young, inexperienced and inattentive, and service was extremely slow. The singular portion butter served for the three of us with the bread was rock hard straight from the fridge; the pork belly was tough and rubbery, with the fat insufficiently rendered. The only potato side available was fries — I would have preferred mashed potatoes. The nearly £40 steaks were adequate, but there was no choice of sauces; the one served was heavily herbed and overpowering (tarragon and basil), which may not suit everyone. We booked a room rate that included dinner, but this was not reflected on our bill. Breakfast was made to order only, not buffet style, which we weren’t informed of, so we had to rush the staff to get served in time for our taxi. The full English was fine. My soft‑boiled eggs arrived in a bowl, not in eggcups, so I didn’t really know how to dip the soldiers — and I was given only about three sourdough soldiers for two eggs. You must ask for everything extra (juice, tea, coffee, water, toast, condiments…), and staff measure portions (they asked how many spoonfuls of ketchup and served a tiny half glass of juice). It’s inconvenient, mean and silly really, especially when staff aren’t available to top up drinks or wait for toast and condiments while your meal goes cold. Would I return? Not at that price and level and quality of service — it wasn’t good value for money. It felt stuffy, overpriced and not very relaxed. There are much nicer great value exceptional service and relaxed atmosphere spa experiences in the area like Calcot manor in Tetbury.

Grand manor with superior gardens and attentive staff!!

Gorgeous hotel with superb gardens! We interacted with quite a lot of the staff and found all of them extremely friendly and happily willing to go above and beyond! What made our stay truly enjoyable was the portable air conditioning. The staff knew we had just finished the Cotswold Way under extreme heat and had the a/c on in our nicely cooled room! Thank you for thoughtful care to make our stay truly wonderful!

Presentation and attention to detail

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

We found our stay to be very average overall. While our room was clean, it lacked proper maintenance, particularly the ceiling in the bathroom, which was in need of attention. We also tried the formal dining experience, which unfortunately felt underwhelming. Both male waiters appeared poorly groomed and would have benefited from a more professional presentation. Additionally, there did not appear to be any formal dress code in the main restaurant. We observed guests arriving in trainers, and one guest was even wearing shorts, which felt more suited to a holiday camp than a five-star hotel. Overall, the hotel did not exude the level of class and refinement one would expect from a five-star establishment. Greater investment in maintenance, a clearer dress code for formal dining, and higher standards of staff presentation would significantly enhance the guest experience.

Bravo overall Bath Priory

Overall we enjoyed our 4-night stay and rated accordingly. What went well - Easy parking - Walkable access to Bath Centre, enabling us to fulfil our plans during our stay - Pleasant staff. In particular Dylan on reception and Niamh, Ewan and Dylan in the lounge and dining areas, along with Gurval the GM in the restaurant and bar area. Some staff knew the area better than others and offered some ideas on what to do whilst in Bath. - Comfortable room (Camden Suite) with welcome fruit and biscuits and daily paper, and welcome gift and Easter present for our daughter. We were provide a slight extension on check out too, thank you - Enjoyable flexibility at breakfast and dining from The Pantry (omelette very good) - Pools (in and out) and spa facilities accessible with restrictions dependent on age - Access to the grounds and dining on the terrace along with games such as boules - we had some billing queries - by working with reception and the GM Gurval we resolved the queries, thank you Even Better If - our room had a blue dog toy in it, presumably from a previous visit. A blue cleaning cloth was also left on the floor one night after turn down. The fitted sheet in the main bedroom had a small tear, all of which was avoidable. - all staff were friendly, however some staff seemed rather less confident and empowered to help when other potentially more senior staff were unavailable. The bar and lounge area could be understaffed for periods especially when dining periods were busier, meaning it was protracted to replenish a drink for example - pool access was at points quite regimented : for example when staying in the pool for a few minutes after 11am whilst my wife checked if our room was cleaned, we were asked to leave the pool. There is a fine line between efficiency and officiousness and this felt rather like the latter on this occasion - on 2 mornings we were provided dinner menus for one of us instead of the breakfast menu, this was avoidable - Camden Suite windows rattled heavily in the wind and the fasteners were loose There was also a DVD player in our lounge but no DVD library on site - The shower door was loose and made it more challenging to make sure water stayed in the shower cubicle - knowledge of alarm test on Tuesdays at 11am : had to check this was a drill having evacuated the room as a precaution via the nearest exit - Front of house are also welcoming new guests and helping them settle in whilst managing existing guests needs. This leads to gaps in availability in staff at times front of house leaving other staff members exposed at points. - There was a leak in a bedroom above The Pantry meaning dining space options were limited. After a patient wait at reception whilst new guests arrived and were offered the only table opening in The Pantry (I was literally stood with the menu in my hand whilst hearing the only spare table be reserved). After speaking with Rebecca at the desk, we were however able to get some preordered Pantry dining options delivered to the lounge area instead. The main restaurant was fully booked, albeit it appeared with limited capacity. - onsite charging option for electric vehicles We hope these comments help enhance future service delivery at The Bath Priory. Thank you for looking after us.
