About the Hotel

Hotel de Rome is located on Bebelplatz, off Unter den Linden. It is a conversion of an existing building constructed in 1889 by architect Ludwig Heim (appointed master builder of the government), which housed the head office of Dresdner Bank until 1945. This is one of the few luxury hotels in Berlin located in an original building making use of its full architectural splendour and thereby offering guests an authentic Berlin experience. The ornate and classical design of the original building has been given a contemporary twist by designer Tommaso Ziffer, who also designed the Hotel de Russie in Rome. Tommaso Ziffer has been assisted by architects Aukett + Heese with Olga Polizzi and her design team at Rocco Forte Hotels.

Reviews for Hotel de Rome, a Rocco Forte Hotel

I would give this hotel 10 stars if I could

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

What can I say? This is, in my opinion, a fantastic hotel in a brilliant location. If I could give it ten stars I would. The location is absolutely perfect for exploring the area, finding traditional bars, restaurants and attractions. The hotel itself is magnificent with wide open areas, great architecture, very spacious rooms which are beautifully designed, with every modern amenity I needed, our room had a great fridge with ample stocks, the bathroom was large, modern and well stocked. Our room was made up every day and all areas of the hotel are spotlessly clean. The breakfast choices are varied and exceptional catered with top notch ingredients . We did not dine in the hotel so cannot comment in the restaurant offerings. Most important to me are the staff. The staff were BRILLIANT! Professional, helpful, polite, thoughtful, knowledgeable about all the things we needed, there to serve but not in an obsequious manner and all of the staff we spoke with spoke English which we found very useful. A young intern on the reception desk (from Turkey) was exceptionally good as she was helpful, polite, friendly and went above and beyond to help. I hope we go back one day.

Excellent staff and wonderful location

I am fortunatly well traveled and stay in many nice hotel thus I have a bit to compare. I have been to the Hotel de Rome few times and will come again. Not because they have the nicest rooms but mostly because of the staff. There are other brands that do luxury better but Roco Forte does people best. The staff make up for shortcomings in product. Here you will find people who care. Some of the names I encounted in my travels to Berlin were a lovely Italian gentleman at the reception Jacob (?), Martin, Roksolina at breakfast (what a joy), and lastly what I consider to be one of the finest concierge teams I have had the pleasure to deal with, especially David and Julian.

Great Hotel in a great city

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

In March 2025 we had a stay of five nights at the Hotel De Rome. It was great, even so the personal, from porter, concierge, front desk, dining room etc. etc. Overall, the service was excellent, and we felt confident that assistance was readily available whenever required. The hotel, originally an old bank, is situated in a prime location close to notable historical sites. Its placement among historic buildings is both unique and appealing, offering a quiet environment while being centrally located. Our room was exceptionally clean and tastefully decorated. The restaurant and staff were excellent. We enjoyed a delightful dinner and breakfast with a wide variety of options suitable for everyone. The spa in the old Fault of the bank is phenomenal. We loved it. Thank you for this pleasant stay.

Best possible location!

We had an amazing stay at this neoclassical property in East Berlin. Hotel de Rome has it all - top-notch service, historical details, and luxurious interiors and amenities. The location is great- right next to the Opera House and the famed boulevard Unter den Linden. Only a short walk away you have both the Humboldt Forum and Museum Island. But the best was the 65-foot heated indoor pool, located in the former jewellery vault (the hotel was originally a bank). The pool area had newly been renovated but had still its original marble columns and mosaic tiles. We will defiantly come back! Jessica and Elton

Kudos to the staff !

Alright, this will be a somewhat atypical review for what turned out to be an atypical trip. Let’s start with the usuals: the location is fantastic—tucked away just enough to shield you from the busy traffic, yet all the must-see spots are within walking distance. The building feels grand and spacious, with a somewhat understated interior. As a photographer couple, we particularly loved the photo art in the bar and smoking lounge—be sure to check it out. The temporary photo exhibit on the fall of the Berlin Wall was an unexpected bonus. Speaking of the bar: it has a great atmosphere, but sitting close to the bar itself can get noisy. Whisky lovers (guilty!) should definitely check out the Dalmore collection. The spa, housed in the former bank vault, was clean but small, featuring a sauna and a steam bath. As is often the case in Germany, bath clothing isn’t mandatory. The pool, however, is a must-see—beautifully designed and worth a visit. Our room was very spacious and clean, albeit with a minimalist design. A word of advice: don’t pay extra for the “city view.” We received it as a free upgrade, but apart from a lot of scaffolding, there wasn’t much to see. Breakfast was wonderful, offering a great combination of buffet and menu options. The quality of the sparkling wine was surprisingly good—far better than the usual offerings at breakfast buffets. Now for the unusual part: I woke up on the first morning with abdominal pain unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Long story short: an ambulance ride to the hospital, 11 hours of waiting, and treatment for what turned out to be kidney stones. It was quite an ordeal for my wife as well, but I have to give a HUGE shoutout to the staff at Hotel De Rome. They went above and beyond to help her, checked up on her throughout the day, and even gave me helpful advice upon my return: drink lots of beer to pass the stone! Overall, it was a great stay, and I hope to return to Hotel De Rome under less painful circumstances.
