Grand Hotel Esplanade
Lutzowufer 15
Berlin-Tiergarten, Germany

This hotel is a little bit far out of the city by foot, but easy to get in quickly via bike/bus. Not far from Tiergarten and Berlin zoo, which was nice as these were both places I wanted to visit on my trip. Bed was comfy, bathrooms clean and well stocked with products. This was a cosy place to stay in Berlin. We had no noise issues and enjoyed using the outside space for drinks on an evening.

I honestly don't recognise the bad reviews of this place. Food was excellent, staff attentive and room excellent. I will definitely use the place again.

This is a good hotel but as other have noted it is showing its age. The AC is not up to the task, room temperature averaged around 26 degrees celsius even if you kept the AC on all day, had the the lights turned off and curtains closed. It was the same as the actual temperature outside as the pictures show. Having read similiar issues before I called the hotel before our stay and was assured that the AC is working. The 2nd day I complained one employee admitted that they aim to achieve 24 degrees but that's not always possible. On the positive side, most employees were friendly and supportive, the executive lounge was well stocked and had a variety of food/wine/beer offerings during the 6 to 9 PM period. Breakfast had a great variety with an omelete station and attendees who very constantly clearing tables.

This hotel is out of City so takes a short 10 minutes metro ride from Nollendorfplatz to the Centre with a 8-10 minute walk from the hotel itself to the metro. Pleasant surroundings and relatively quiet so all good there. The stay itself was fine, comfortable beds, good showers and clean rooms and on the basis it’s a base to explore the things I note below are all personal to me. What I would say is the staff were excellent, attentive, polite and very friendly. Top marks. The first thing is that hotel looks dated, the reception is quite dark and ‘of its time’ and perhaps appeals to the more mature guest who looks the 1980/90 vibe of dark brown, beige and subdued lighting. The room a/c on floor 6 kept the room warm and humid, we opened the windows on the second night and it worked better than the a/c which was controlled by a red to blue dial for hot and cold, I don’t think the dial did anything to be honest so this made sleeping when outside temperatures were 20-22 deg C in the night challenging. The shower is an in bath type and worked well. The bathroom was dated and the wooden veneer below the sink was peeling, I expect the rooms are in need of refurbishment in the next 2-3 years. If you want Central Berlin then this isn’t for you but all in all it was fine but I wouldn’t return due to location and current ‘vibe’.
