Two days in Boothbay

Great location. Amazing views. Rooms were very nice. Property is showing some signs of aging. We had a great time despite mixed experiences with staff.

This is not fun to write, but necessary for other vacationers. My husband and I needed a getaway after several months of an illness. We are well acquainted with the Maine coast but hadn’t been to Boothbay Harbor in decades. The website for Spruce Point was enticing and just what we were looking for. Things went downhill quickly. Upon entering our partial ocean view room, we encountered the filthiest, stained carpet we have ever seen. We are not fussy or entitled but at least expect a clean room. I did not walk in bare feet the whole weekend in that room, it was disgusting. The furniture was minimal and no decor or art on the walls. The cleaning crew made the bed and took the trash and that was it. The AC unit was blowing musty air and upon closer inspection, clearly the filter had never been cleaned or replaced in many years. There was a wedding taking place, and we had our small dog with us. Being good pet owners and guests, we opted to get takeout from the Salty Stag restaurant on the premises. There is no way to call them directly so I called the front desk multiple times to figure out the process and after three calls and the phone ringing incessantly, finally someone answered and said they would have to walk over to the restaurant to get someone to help me. Not a biggie, but it was a lot of effort just to get something to eat. Food was ok, not worth the high price though. Again, we are fine paying whatever something costs, but expect better quality at a so=called “resort”. The grounds and views are second to none, just spectacular. But the buildings…all of them….need repairs, need to be painted, power washed, and updated in general. It takes energy, effort and expense to go away for a vacation, short or long, and spending money for the kind of experience we had is just not fair. I understand from the countless other reviews I have read (too late) that the amenities that we did not need were also a big disappointment as things were broken, not available or not in working order. I also read that a private equity group purchased the resort 2 years ago. They unfortunately pay no attention to these negative reviews as none of the complaints and observations have been addressed whatsoever. They are not running it, they are running it into the ground. Travelers beware.

Very relaxing and comfortable stay

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

We really enjoyed our couple of nights at this resort in September. We were in a lodge room which seemed recently refurbished and was very clean and comfortable. The resort has been there for 133 seasons and I’m sure it’s very busy in the summer. It’s a beautiful spot. We switched out of our first room because it had an air freshener scent, but they easily moved us to another room that did not have that scent, and it was fine. The pool and hot tub on the harbor are beautiful and there are also a lot of very nice spots throughout the resort where they have a couple of chairs and you can sit by yourself.

Unfortunately disappointed

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

Unfortunately, it did not meet our expectations. Our room had a persistent rank smell, which after showering seemed to be related to mold. The bed was lumpy and uncomfortably hard, as were the pillows. The sheets were scratchy. For the premium price, I expected a much higher level of comfort and upkeep. The location and grounds were beautiful

Lack of hotel information provided

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

There is a lot to like about spruce point. One item that really could have helped us is a basic in-room information booklet about the restaurants and operating hours, the different special things offered (spa, boat rides, pools, etc. ) how to sign up, schedules, etc. It is pretty basic, but there was basically no information in the room. Maybe it was just our room.
